Photoshop Alternatives

What are some good lower price alternatives for photoshop?

I want to be able to continue to design work I'm doing but the high price prevents me from using it past the trial.

Gimp is the best IMO. But I like Gimpshop which mimicks the look/feel of Photoshop.

Have you ever though about Photoshop Elements? I haven't tried it out, but maybe you should look into it.

To a point I agree, but I've found Pixelmator is weak on Masks, and Layer adjustments (which are pretty much what I use the GIMP for on a daily basis)
