I've played with PS and it is so complicated, I just do not have any interest in learning how to use it. For my design work, I use Sketch and Pixelmator.

    check them out.

You can download something free like Gimpshop as well. If you don't have strong artistic talents sites like fiverr can allow you to get one made cheaply.

That is just a template for Photoshop. You still have to pay for (or already have) Photoshop. I use PS6

You should use vector graphics for app icons. If you have money buy Adobe Illustrator. I use an open source tool called inkscape. The version on their web site requires XQuartz on OS X. There is a beta version that doesn't.

I too use Sketch for all my icons and other graphics. It's an excellent application.

GIMP is free, and what I used for iPhone icons long ago. But I switched to Pixelmator (paid app available from the Mac app store), which was a ton less expensive than the Photoshop version my professional graphics consultant used.

You need to look up Photoshop CS6 or something. I have it from before CC (their new stuff where you pay annually) was introduced, but I don't know where you get it now.

Pixelmator is what most of the Mac developers I know use. It's only $20 (compared to Photoshop at $500), and includes all the tools that developers need to create icons and edit images. Photoshop is overkill and unnecessary for developers. Graphic Artists would find some tools in Photoshop essential. But for creating icons, Photoshop is overkill.

I also started using Sketch a little while ago, it's really good and not too pricey, definitely worth a look. There's a few tutorials and videos on youtube.
