how do I set up photoshop cs4 to open with a coloured background so that the desktop is obscured?

I had this same issue when i first installed and thought something was wrong with the program.

Look at the menu bar and select the Window tab. Select the option for "background" something.

I'm at work and doing this from memory so forgive me for not being more precise. But it's an option you need to select under the Window menu.
