Hello. I noticed that after running Photoshop CS6 on my new 27 inch i7 iMac it takes up to 30 seconds to shut down the computer. This doesn't happen if I don't run Photoshop. It only takes 2/3 seconds.

However if I run Photoshop, quit it, make sure that it fully quit it still takes about 20 seconds to quit. I get a gray screen with a spinning wheel (not beachball), then it finally shuts down.

Anyone know what could be causing this?

Thanks.

Probably not related but how much RAM do you have and how big are the files? I had an issue with saving 4GB files from Photoshop even though the computer had 16GB of RAM.

32 gb of ram. I'm not even working on a file. If I simply open and close PS the imac takes longer to shut down.

PhotoShop is an incredibably complex program, almost an OS in itself, and when you quit the program it has a lot of housekeeping to take care of before it goes away. Saving Preferences and stuff like that. The only way to make it hurry up is to run it off an SSD. That will help, but really, you should have been around back when a fast computer ran at 120 mega hertz and a good dose of ram was measured in megabytes rather than gigabytes.

I don't miss the $1100, 32MB stick of RAM I bought back then. ;)

I do, however, miss the $1100. :)

Good point on PS shutting down.

Dale makes an excellent point. I never shut down my MBP after I'm done using either LR or PS, but it is a very large and complex program. I always noticed that it takes a little while for CS6 to shut down on my laptop after I'm done editing a image in the program. I guess I have gotten used to it, so I really don't noticed the time it takes to shut down the program.

Sorry I hould have mentioned it's not the program that takes forever to shut down, it takles 10 times as long to shut down the computer after running PS.

This isn't really going to be any help for you because it's a 20 second process of itself, but for those who keep on working with their computers and don't shut down after using PS, try grabbing an app called "Free Memory" which is free or "Free Memory Pro" which costs 99 cents. I use it every time after closing any of the Adobe suite to free up the RAM that's still locked up.
