I've been sticking to my Photoshop Elements 2.0 since I got my Wacom tablet. I know Elements 3.0 is out, but should I upgrade? Any compelling reasons or a really neat feature that's of use?
Only you can decide that. Look at the Adobe website for the new features for Photoshop Eleements 3.

I'll probably wait for Elements 3.0 to drop in price though. 2.0 dropped rapidly. I expect the latest to do the same. And I'm quite content with 2.0. :)
And don't forget to take advantage of the upgrade rebate. Or maybe you should just wait until you want a new tablet and see if that comes with Elements 3.

If you're a US consumer eligible for the higher ed discount, it's available for as little as $60 shipped, without rebates. :D

it says $37 and OEM version. is that in any way negative?

Thanks, Andi, I feel much better now that it's an additional $8 less than what I paid. ;) OEM means that you will not get a manual. The manual for PSE3 is not exactly an heirloom you will pass on to your children, although it does come with a small manual. If there are other differences, I'm not honestly sure. It's possible that it's some kind of limited edition in comparison to retail PSE3. Also retail PSE3 does not come on a Mac/Win combined CD -- I only have the Mac version....Someone should order it and find out! :D

iphoto library, working in elements 2.0

New mac user (since March), I prefer to edit, etc. photos using elements (2.0); i have noticed that when I want to browse my photos from elements (in the iphoto library) I cannot do this by albums etc. and I now realize that browsing in the iphoto library is not a great way to try to find photos if you are using elements. Am I missing something? Is there a better way to access the iphoto library from elements? Should I put my photo files somewhere else for use by elements?

thanks in advance for any advice.

I've found the best way is to have iPhoto running while PSE is running, set PSE as the external editor, and let iPhoto feed photos to PSE. iPhoto is pretty good about not hogging resources while it is not actively being asked to do anything.

This also has the advantage that (assuming HD space is not at too huge a premium) iPhoto will store originals of your photos in addition to the modified ones.

What you do is: first, set the external editor in iPhoto prefs to be PSE. You can only set the editor when the option is set so that double clicks launch externally, but after you set it, you can change this back to one of the other options. Then, either double click (if you didn't change it back) or ctrl-click / right-click the photo and choose open in external editor. When you save the changes in PSE, it will automatically update in iPhoto, and also keep the original version (so that you can use the revert feature in iPhoto). Subsequent edits change the modified version but do not change the original (so you always have original + latest).

Also, if you *don't* want to keep the original, then from iPhoto, instead of using the external editor option, drag the photo to the PSE icon on the dock. This will edit the original, rather than filing it and creating a new copy.
