So I have just about reached capacity on my iPhone 4s 16Gb and I noticed that a fair chunk of this is taken up with photo stream.

At the moment the iPhone is the only device I use for photo stream because AFAIK there is no way to integrate Lightroom into the equation.

Please correct me if I am wrong (I am on 5.0.1 btw and not 5.1) but why doesn't apple design photo stream so that if the photo is already on the device then it just links to that photo rather than downloading it again.

At this rate it looks like I will just have to turn photo stream off as it's using 3gb+ on my iPhone for no good reason.

Can someone just tell me I'm being completely stupid and that there is some way round this!

    Cheers!

You could upgrade your phone to 5.1, allowing you to delete photos from PS.

That's not the issue because if I delete the photo's then it defeats the point of having photo stream.

My issue is that there are two copies of the same photo files. One that originated from the phone and the other that has been downloaded from the cloud.

If I delete a photo from photo stream it will disappear from the cloud and therefore if my phone is lost/stolen/breaks I will have lost the photo all together.

Wrong, with 5.1 if you delete a photo it's only deleted from your iOS device.
If I truly want to deleted from photostream I musy delete from the photostream section in Aperture

    sorry you're wrong.

iOS5.1 added the ability to delete photos from the photostream which removes it from all devices.

If you only use a single device for photostream what is the point having photostream turned on?

    ----------

For photos that were added to photostream under 5.1, not older. I may be wrong but I think photos deleted from iOS still remain in OS X iPhoto

Don't know why I replied twice. Stupid iPad. Sorry

As stated by others this is unfortunately only the case with photo's that were synched to photo stream before updating to 5.1

As stated in my second post to have a backup of photo's should my phone be lost/stolen/wiped/broken.

It seems that probably the best approach is to turn off photo stream and just synch to lightroom everyone once and a while.

If you use iCloud to backup your phone then your pictures can be backed up without the need of photostream.

But that only backs up 5gb doesn't it?

Take photos, let them upload to photostream.

Every other day or so, erase your camera roll on your phone. (After checking that the last photo you took did, in fact, get uploaded.)

Make sure that your mac downloads your photostream every few days. If Lightroom won't sync with it then use iPhoto for syncing and then drag them from iPhoto to Lightroom whenever you get around to it.

As long as the phone is syncing with Photstream every few days and Photostream is syncing with iPhoto, your photos will be fine. Clearing out the camera roll will ensure that only have 1 copy on your phone...the Photostream version.

Unfortunately wouldn't be so simple as I have some videos taken with the iPhone so it would be harder than just deleting all of the camera roll.

I know that lots of people have chimed in with ways around this problem and I thank them for that but it's just annoying that whilst photo stream "works" it's not in the most efficient way...

PhotoStream is not backup, it is only good for 30 days.

It is for temporary storage, and easy syncing between PC and iPad. It doesn't have any further purpose, trying to use it for other purpose will have severe limitations.

I think I have come to the realisation that this is the case. Thanks.

Your right but if you really can't sync to PC then if it were me I would upgrade my iCloud storage or find another cloud based solution to upload my photos.

Thanks, I think I will just make more of an effort to back up now!

Thanks, I take a lot with my phone that's why I was keen to keep a hold of them!

You could use Instant Upload on Google+ to automatically backup your photos there.

Im having someone else's pics appear on my devices that are photostreamed together. Anyone have this issue and know how to fix?
