To throw something overboard or away. Originally the call of a sailor to the bridge that the depth of the water is more than six but not quite seven fathoms.

I think the six fathoms bit long preceded the six feet as in coffin depth.

Yeah, I didn't know/remember the specifics of the phrase, but as far as I can always remember, it's something I heard people say on ships in movies. So I always associated it with the water.

I create my own phrases as I travel this great land, and wait to hear if any have become part of the common lexicon. I prefer absurdist, non sequitur-style things. Keeps 'em off-balance.

For example: When asked, "How are you doing?", I invariably reply, "Everybody I can." It's also a good way to find out if they're really paying attention.
