Over rated.

It could be good to insure privacy if doing some banking, etc on a public hotspot.
But those activities use so little data, I just drop off to cellular.

I use PIA and NordVPN on my iPhones. I don't want the carrier knowing what I am doing, nor do I want to be ad-targeted.

I use PIA on my iPhone when on public wifi. I pay per GB of data so switching to cellular isn't a good option.

Not sure what kinks you had, but PIA has always worked well for me on my Macs and on my iPhone
