Firstly I've had the 2015 13" and 2017 15" (completely top end) models. Then while in India on a work trip I spilled a drink all over my 15" and there went $3300 down the drain. I was a little hurt by that feeling so I decided to try the Huawei Matebook X Pro. I have to say the Matebook X Pro is by far the best windows laptop I've used for productivity and media consumption. The only problem is its windows. So for that reason I started looking at Macs again and frankly I didn't like the offerings. I don't see anything in what's currently being offered that justifies the price. I'd have spent the money had it been worth it but right now it's just old tech with a few tweaks. There's no reason to really pick up a 2019 MacBook until they do some new redesigns.

So I started looking into the 12" MacBooks and I was pretty worried. In my mind there was no way a fanless machine could handle what I wanted to do with it. I was first sent the wrong unit, a 2016 model, which I sent back and was immediately sent a 2017 unit. I can tell you that between the '16 m5 and '17 i5 I've noticed a big difference. With hardware supported HEVC playback it's just awesome. This has very quickly become my favorite machine. I still have a 17" windows laptop with RTX 2070 (desktop) for gaming but for everything else I'm finding this machine to be very capable, a joy to work with, and I simply carry it with me everywhere. It's kicking the Huawei Matebook X Pro to HTPC duty (I like to actually use windows for the HTPC due to better audio and video support).

Anyway I know this is nothing technical but if you're like me and not really wanting any of the current apple offerings then give the 2017 MacBook a try. It's a real joy to use, fluid, and great for everyday use. I picked mind up with 512GB SSD, i5, and 8GB memory for $700USD on eBay. Working like a charm.

Unfortunately not many of them left around

Just check on eBay. The only thing I couldn't find was a 2017 i7 model. I was reluctant to go with the i5 as I always feel I need more power but honestly my user experience in everything has been great. I don't code or edit video but I will get super annoyed if I have to wait for programs to load or the internet being slow. Last night I downloaded very high bit-rate 4k UHD 10-bit samples, I know the screen is only 1440p so it's downsampled, and it played them using less than 20%. What this means is I can take the USB-C to HDMI cable I have and plug it directly into any 4k TV and it can handle the workload like a champ. If only MacOS supported TrueHD audio and 24fps frame rates I'd have it run with the lid closed and be a near invisible HTPC.
