The g5 is quiet for awhile, until you start doing something. Then it goes nuts.

Yeah, I mean it doesn't do it all the time, but when it does, it becomes very clear when those Fans Rev Up

Even simple web browsing? what rpm are the fans hitting? turn off web plugins/java in Safari preferences/security, due to lack of plugins getting updated for PPC.

Another question, jesus christ. I've NEVER seen a computer put out this kind of heat before. My main rig is a Phenom AMD 8 core, with 16 gigs of ram, and an ATi 6970 ( I think, forget atm ). 6 Hard drives, and two blue ray drives. And it doesn't put out half the heat this thing does, is that normal? All the fans appear to be working just fine, and there isn't a spec of dust in it.

These things were known for heat, but macbook pros run the cpus just as hot at times. I was about to ask if there was any trapped dust in there especially toward the back. Under load in the summer, the cpus are probably in the 160F range. Note Fahrenheit (as I didn't note your geographic location). Some of the macbook pros actually get hotter if you're gaming on one.

I had a similar experience with your fan issue when i bought my third hand dual 1.8 G5. The fans would rev up and be annoying as hell at first. Its caused by having your energy saving settings to "automatic" if you go into system preferences > energy saver > Options then look where it says "processor performance' you can change it to either "reduced, automatic or highest" trying putting it on anything but "automatic" I first changed it to reduced and it solved the problem completely. Then I got curious and changed it to highest and it was the same result. So in the end i got better performance and no jet engine fan noise even when playing something like HALO or even Doom 3. Give that a try and see how it works for you.

Whelp, now its just ALWAYS jet engine sound back to automatic. I've gotten used to it. I supposed my main rig just had huge 240mm case fans, and a HUGE heatsink on the Phenom 8 core ( just installed yesterday :D Yes, its a beast ). So none of the fans have to spin really fast, so quiet. So I'm spoiled. I've built a ton of PCs, and I always go with the huge fan option, less noise.

One thing, I cannot stand about OSX, and its pissing me off, big time. Is how OSX tracks your mouse, no matter what I adjust, it just pisses me off. Am I nuts or does it track your mouse differently than Windows?
