Tried to install Leopard on the SSD drives.

Unfortunately, they don't show up in Disk Utility or the installer. Verdict: Usable as storage drives (say for pro apps, games, as a cache drive etc.) but not for installation and booting the OS from.

I have a CalDigit FASTA-4E (Quad eSATA) card which works on the Late 2005 PowerMac G5. I'll be using the 4TB Black in an external eSATA enclosure instead.

On the inside of the machine I'm putting in two traditional drives instead; WD 750GB 2.5" Black for Leopard and another 2.5" 750GB Blue drive for storage. I have to get trays for them though but don't know which will fit as there is little room to move the cables.

That's odd, my OWC SSD's work just fine as boot drives in my G5 Quad, and make for a nice reponsive operating system.

That's odd, my OWC SSD's work just fine as boot drives in my G5 Quad, and make for a nice reponsive operating system.

Unfortunately, OCZ drives are SATA 3 and though they work on Mac Pro by automatically configuring down to SATA 2, they don't seem to show up for installation on the PowerMac G5.

They do work as storage devices which is great if you need to use it to store pro apps/games/cache drive etc.

That's okay though. I've put in a WD Black 7200RPM (2.5") drive in the lower slot. It is working much faster.

Western Digital Black drives are pretty good! The SSDs are not bootable since they are SATA III. Very few people have luck getting SATA III SSDs usable let alone bootable.

Just installed an OCZ Vertex 2 SATA 2 120gb on my Power Mac G5, can definitely see the difference. If you're looking for a performance gain I recommend looking into this!

Did a thermal calibration on the G5.

Quiet Room:
Average: 21.9 dB
Min: 20.5 dB
Max: 22.3 dB

Before Calibration:
Average: 54.2 dB
Min: 39.9 dB
Max: 68.6 dB

After Calibration:
Average: 43.5 dB
Min: 40.0 dB
Max: 48.3 dB

Quite a difference, system is much quieter now. Took about 30 minutes from ASD 2.6.3.

Been getting quite a bunch of Kernel Panics, now I'm concerned I was ripped off.

Fixes Tried:
-> Clean install of Leopard on a different hard disk.
-> PRAM reset, PMU reset button, NVRAM Reset from OFW, Repair Perms.

Those kernel panics seem to be caused by a hardware problem, such as a CPU.

Well that is definitely not good. The seller assured me it was in full working order. The issue is the long delay between each KP so it was impossible for me to know there's an issue during purchase.

I did run some testing on it:
ASD 2.6.3 (44 tests) PASSED
Rember OK

I skipped mostly all the ASD tests like cpu, memory, disk which take quite a long time. I'll run them now. Guess it's to late to complain to the seller, didn't exactly know what the problem was (and still don't have a confirmed issue).

I know rember says its all good, but do you have any old ddr2 sticks laying around that you know to be good?

May wanna try pulling all the ram out and keeping only the know good ones for a while and see if the crashes return.

Unfortunately I don't think I have the specific DDR2 sticks the G5's use.

I did run ASD, all 96 available tests. Took 1.5hrs and it PASSED.

So, it could be a bad install. I did a clean install on this drive. Followed by migrating older data (incl. system/app caches etc.) onto this drive from the older drive.

Will try the following again:
- Re-seat memory and graphics cards one by one.
- Wipe zeros, fresh install.

I cleaned and reseated all memory DIMMs and the graphics card (lost 2 screws, had to tilt the machine to get them out).

Update: Crashed again, just a few moments ago.

Attempting the following now:
- Use air pump to ensure no dust are in the connectors (USB, FW, internal SATA etc.)
- Wipe zeros, fresh install of OS X Leopard.

Also forgot to mention that the ODD drive is 3rd party, though since I am not using it, that couldn't be a reason for the random crashes.

That kinda looks like a bad CPU. Not overly sure about it, but it is hardware based.

A couple things I did:
- I wiped the main 750GB black drive with single zero pass and did a clean installation of Leopard.
- Also dropped the "Processor Performance" in the Energy settings pane to Reduced. Helps keep the machine silent (otherwise it's over 55 dB).
- Added jumper to PIN 5 - 6 as suggested here. WD states it reduces SATA III (6.0GB/s) to SATA II (3.0GB/s).
- Added jumper to PIN 1 - 2 per WD manual for the 750GB Black 2.5" drive I am using. Setting allows for reduced power spin up. Previously I was getting flashing folder icon for 2 seconds before the Apple logo would appear.

Using it now.

Have you rebuilt or serviced the cooling system at all in that G5?

Not yet. I haven't been able to open up the cover. I can't seem to find a "dummies guide" to opening the pin lock on the cover. I don't want to drill it or damage it. A video on YouTube said to stick a "sharp instrument" into it and the pin should pop out but there isn't enough space to stick anything in where the pin hole is.

The back fan is loose and can be moved around a few centimeters (seems out of place). I was able to move the back fan, stick a torch there and see there is a massive coating of dust on the inside (on the bottom, but not much on the CPU boards). I wasn't able to see much inside though.

Update: No luck on the clean install. Even after wiping zeros / clean install / jumper settings.

I am going to try:
- Dropping down to 1 stick of RAM. If it doesn't crash with this then it is the rest of the RAM.
- Going back to the Apple original 160GB hard disk.

I have been able to decipher some of the KP based on information on the net. It is possible to be either the RAM or Hard Disk. Going to run ASD loop for 24-48hrs.

Contacted the seller but they didn't respond.

Just crashed again:

Pulled out RAM down to 2GB configuration (2 DIMMs). Ran fine for about 16hrs. Added back more sticks to a total of 6GB and that ran fine for about 24hrs.

Thought it was the memory since one of the sticks has the same MODEL # and type but the Serial # is different and the #'s on the actual chips are different. Guess it wasn't.

Just had a strange problem which is what I was getting before. Most of the crashes being when the display was off and the system was idle. It crashed, the fans maxed out and I had to force power down.

Code:

Could potentially be one of the following:
-> Optical Drive which is a Pioneer pc drive but seems to be able to work read/burn discs and shows up as "Generic Drive Support".
----> Likely the cause after a quick google search. The DVD drive seems to fail to power down.
-> CalDigit FASTA-4E (doubt that since crashes were happening before).
-> Hard Drive incompatible (WD 2.5" Black 750GB)

Will disconnect the DVD drive completely, add back the RAM to 8GB and see if it goes another 24-48hrs normal usage.

Try unplugging the drive completely. Also, what keyboard and mouse are you using? I had a Mac knockoff model cause the machine to crash exactly as yours was when idle. The fans would blast and it would just kernel panic.

The front of the PowerMac G5, the dvd plate that slides down is slightly bent out of place and gets stuck so it has to be manually moved until it snaps back up when the DVD tray is closed. There is also no EMI shield like on Apple burners. I assume the previous seller ripped out the Apple DVD burner and put in this PC Pioneer burner and in the process, messed up the front plate.

I unplugged the Pioneer PC dvd burner. It did work in terms of read/burn and showed up as Generic Drive Support. Took quite a while to isolate it. After some googling, the console error and fans blasting seem to be indicative of an incompatible DVD burner.

I have a PowerMac G4 733 (works but I've tended to just keep pulling parts out of it as needed) with a SuperDrive or a Combo Drive? I'll probably try pulling that out or the SuperDrive from my G4 Dual 1GHz and install it in the PowerMac G5 assuming it fits.

.....Ouch, I definitely have genuine peripherals.

As for the keyboard/mouse, I'm using the standard Apple Wired Aluminum Keyboard (older model with Expose and Dashboard keys) as well as the Apple Mighty Mouse. I have an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Magic Mouse but no bluetooth card (original Apple ones cost a fortune on eBay) so I can't use them on the G5 unfortunately. I found a cheap $5 USB bluetooth dongle that has mac-esq design (silver/aluminum) on eBay that claims to work with "Mac 10.2.8". Will order that and see how it goes with Leopard.

Trying to find out why every Mac (even Intels and PCs) were crashing was really fun. The only common denominator was the keyboard.

Was able to install the SuperDrive from my G4 Dual 1GHz into the PowerMac G5 Quad.

Fits and works just fine.

Pulled out the crappy PC optical drive. Also found an interesting cable inside, the ODD molex had a molex to molex+4/8pin? adapter on it. Looks like some PC (Red/Orange/Black colored) junk left over.

Can finally get X-Plane 9 installed now.

As for the front aluminum door I actually replaced mine on my G5. It is a tight job but refreshing to see it open. You may be able to remove it and straighten it depending on the damage.

I pushed the metal door in ever so slightly, it seems to close now though it's a bit loud.
