3rd person in line at 5:30 this morning. There was roughly 20 by the time 7 rolled around. I was the first that had pre-ordered in line (the other two were just walk-ins), so I was the first person in Columbia, MO to walk out with the iPhone 3GS :D

Sounds like you are someone who expects a break.

I'm not going to tell you what you sound like.

Did you not read my post? 1 person in the store. I'm not taking anyone's pre-order. I'm not looking for a break. I pass the store on the way into work.

You think a line is going to start up at 9:00 am? Wouldn't there already be a line at 8:10 am?

The store wasn't open. They were open to preorders only, special event. They are were not open for regular business, anyone wanting any other phone would have been turned away too. They open for regular business at 9, at which time you are free to conduct any business with them that you want.

At my store the registers weren't even open for sale (since they can't open them until 9) since all the phones being activated were already paid for. Probably couldn't take your money even if he did want to.

If you had gone in on monday wanting one, you would have had to wait for the store to open. Same deal. Mine was locked and you had to show a receipt to security to even get through the door.

I first went to the Apple Store and waited in line for an hour only to be told the primary on the account had to be there (my wife) even though I had a reservation already. On my way home I decided to stop by the AT&T store by my house. I was in and out in 15 minutes with a new phone. Could not have been easier. I was home before 8 :D

I did not pre order as I was not eligable for the lowest price till yesterday. I arrived at the Hopkinsville, KY AT&T store at 5:45am. I was third in line. One person had per ordered and one had not. By the the time the store opened at 7am there was about 12 people in line. The manager called a list of names but no one answered. She then said " OK, we will take the first 5 in line".

By 7:15am, I was in the parking lot with my activated 32gb black Iphone 3GS.

By the time I pulled out of the parking lot, there was no line. I had the impression that the store had plenty additional phones. Also the AT&T manager acted quite surpised at the small size of the line.

This was my third wait in line for iPhone and by far the best experience.

so? they should have OPENED THE STORE EARLY FOR HIM. It only makes "business sense."

Had nothing else to do last night, so went there after I got out of class at 9pm. The ATT manager told me that they got ~ 50 phones in, so we could go back home and come back later if we wanted to, but I stayed with my brother.

Note 1: Played Street Hockey in the ATT parking lot for a couple hours, it was a blast

Note 2: Only 3 people in line, including my brother and I, until 4am.

Note 3: They opened my phone >< ; my family doesn't understand why that pisses me off; I guess its an apple fan.

Note 4, and most importantly: MMS - I asked the friendly rep if she could manually enable MMS on my phone, and she said its a tower issue- of which ONLY Michigan (my state) and Indiana are affected. So apparently, people in any other state can get access to MMS.

Note 5: Got into my store at approx. 7:30 AM with no pre-order; and there was only 1 line (which is what it should have been). We had to wait for a couple stragglers to come in, but then everyone was allowed in (all 10 or so people, one at a time).
But my store only had 3 32 GB Whites, of which the first 3 people in line (my brother and I were 1 and 2) got. Overall it was a blast.

Note 6: some woman came by at around 710 AM wondering what was going on, she wanted to pay a bill...So the manager let her in real quick to do it. FOr anyone who says that it was strictly a pre-order event order only is completely wrong. This was some of the best support you could ask for.

got there at 4:30, was the first in line(didn't pre-order) and after about 6-8 people that did pre-order they let me in, everything went smooth, told the lady not to open my box, she was like ok, and had to tell them no every time thy tried to sell me something extra, all in all it was a better experience than last year

1 person in the store buddy, that's why. They're not going to take my $300 because they imposed a 9:00 am opening for non-preorders? Yeah, that makes good business sense.

Oh my God. Not gonna take your $300? Apple might go out of business losing you as a customer!!

:p

I walked into the mall and into the att store at around 8:15, there were about 6 people buying iPhones, already being helped, a bunch of reps were standing around, I told them what i wanted, they got it for me, activated it and i was out. 10 minutes tops. The AT&T rep said there were only like 3 people in line this morning when they opened. I was really surprised that I walked right in and got helped. I almost feel like my iPhone trip was stolen by the speed and convenience of it all.. :D

but got my black 16gb 3GS syncin now :)
runs like a beast

It makes complete business sense, it's unfair to everyone else who is following protocol and will show up at 9. Why should you be an exception?

ATT was overstaffed for the event. It makes no sense to have people wait in line, while there is absolutely no one in the store. They should have done what my ATT did - all people who preorderd got to go in first. When no-one was left who hadnt preorderd (720amish), the line started moving. If anyone with a pre-order showed up, they went to the front of the line.

Makes complete sense. But if you insist on having an open store with nobody in it...

at my local att store they pulled all pre-orders out of line. They also said when they got done with pre-orders they would do non pre-orders before 9am. Kinda silly for them to be sitting around doing nothing with people waiting

Did anyone else (towards the front of the line) find the AT&T people obnoxiously friendly? As I was waiting for them to open, some lady inside was giving everyone a pep talk, throwing her arms in the air, and shouting "HIP HIP, HOORAY!!", to get everyone all excited and motivated.

When they opened the door, and people were walking in, the lady was saying "GOOD MORNING! WELCOME TO AT&T!!!" to EVERYONE. I felt more annoyed, than welcomed. Upon walking in the door, all the employees were lined up, each one coming out to shake your hand, and saying "Welcome to AT&T, sir! Let's go get your iPhone!"

I mean, I know it's their job to go out of their way like that... but it's annoying when people are forced to go beyond friendly. I'm a friendly guy, but I wouldn't feel comfortable saying "WELCOME TO <COMPANYNAME!>" A simple "Hi!" would suffice, IMO.

The woman activating my phone said they had her working 6am-830 PM.

Yeah, you're gonna need some kinda of sarcastic excitement for that.

I walked in my AT&T store at the mall without pre-ordering it. I just decided 2 days ago I was going to get the iPhone 3GS. I went to the mall at 9 am walked in and asked if they had any in stock, absolutely nobody there she walked to the back handed me my brand new 16GB iPhone 3GS :apple:

You both are tools.

Thanks for being reasonable. Didn't think it was that hard to understand. Not trying to be special here. Also not trying to be a dick like those two up above.

AT&T Hoboken

For the first time of three years, managed to snag one from the local AT&T.
Went down around 7:30 and they had about 20 people, all preorder. Went and had breakfast rolled back an hour later.

Took them to about 9:00 to handle all the pre-order folks. They promptly ran out of 16GB. Didn't care, wanted the 32GB anyway.

When I walked out there were about 7 people waiting and heard they would all get phones. But they didn't have many left. So that's the deal at AT&T in Hoboken. If you are nearby you can call them and you might be in luck and no wait either.

Apple and AT&T preorders made a difference. Was out at 10:00 with a phone.
Since selling the 3g yesterday, just under 24 hours without it.

Good to go now.

i got there right at 7... about 30 people or so in line.

the greeter came out and asked me if i pre-ordered. i said yes. he checked me off the list and said "move to the front of the line, you're next"

that's it. no waiting. no hassle. no nothing. i was actually able to go home and eat breakfast and shave and all that before work at 9am. last year i waited for 2 1/2 hours to not even get half way through the line before i had to leave for work.

pre-ordering at at&t store is the way to go!
