Posted this is the Macbook forum by accident. Anyway...

I didn't do this. My aunt came round and asked to have a look at her friends website. I said sure. She comes over and PICKS IT UP BY THE SCREEN. I tell her not to, she says I'm being silly, but eventually (after me saying you're not supposed to hold it there numerous times) held it by the body.

Would picking it up by the screen JUST THE ONCE have done anything? I'm very protective haha.

I mean, it seems fine. I'm using it as I write this. It was only for a couple of seconds. She'd only just got it off the table when I realised what she was doing.

Was just a bit concerned. In the end I let her use my windows machine. She picked that up by the screen as well. :/

THANKS.

It's just a computer..

Think about how fragile the computer would have to be if picking it up by the screen ruined it

There is probably no damage. I used to do it all the time with an old laptop that I didn't care about anymore. I must have done it 100+ times and it's still perfectly fine.

I wouldn't recommend it though. You never know.

You wouldn't pick up a baby by the head, or a dog by the tail, and I would say it isn't the best idea to pick up a laptop by the screen either. But, that said, if she had done any damage, you would probably know by now. I would definitely not allow her to make a habit out of doing that though. While the construction may be somewhat tough, the screen was definitely not designed for regularly picking up the laptop.

She may say you are being silly, I would say she is taking unnecessary risk.

Nothing to worry about.

I'm sure the hinges can support the weight of the bottom half of the laptop, after all, Apple pays people to think about these sort of things.

You don't pick up a baby by the head or a dog by the tail because their bodies are not designed to work that way.

A computer's hinge is (or should be rather) designed to address the problem OP is talking about ... It's nothing to worry about.

It'll be fine - don't worry about it :) Not a good idea to pick it up by the screen as a habit, but in general it will be fine. The only machine where I would worry more is the first Macbook Airs - especially now that they are old, a lot of their hinges that were dodgy to begin with are now pretty fragile.

i have an old lenovo at home that my wife used to pick up by the screen. 90% sure that's what ruined the screen after a while. i never do it and would never let anyone else do it
