...they are securing the future for their people after their oil supplies diminish - which I read some where that it was about 100 years.

According to a National Geographic special I saw about the islands they're building, their oil will be gone within 15 years, not 100. That's why the crown prince is going crazy building all this stuff, because they have to establish tourism income quickly.

Speaking of the islands, if you guys haven't heard of those before then you're missing the most impressive engineering feat of the entire Dubai revolution. By building all of these man-made islands, they've expanded their coastline from a meager 40-something miles to just under 1000 -- a 2000% increase. Check out the Wikipedia article about the Palm Islands and try to wrap your head around some of the numbers.

I believe it's been done in Japan before too, but don't quote me on it.
Thanks for the link. Looks very interesting! :)

Yes it has been done in Japan before. I believe that the place closed.

While similar in concept, Dubai's place is much nicer. Longer slope with a bend. Resting place midway (at the curve). From the pictures, it feels more like being outside.

Looks like Dubai took learned some things from Japan's attempt and improved upon them.

Yep, they've got one in Fukuoka. I never got to go inside while I was there, but I saw it from the outside.
Looks like there are two in Japan. The one that I was referring to was in Chiba (by Tokyo) near Narita airport.

it is insane, and smart! but poses a question regarding the views about western culture, which all this development is symbolic of. does this have the long term effect of possibly bringing those who would fight us with some sort of acceptance or does it turn their hate towards places like dubai as well?

How old are you?

Damn. What a big target.

..everyone's thinking it; I'm just saying it...

I wasn't thinking it... ;)

As for Dubai, I'm completely amazed at the progress and speed of their development. I just came back from Las Vegas and I had thought they were on over drive with building new hotels and casinos, but they pale in comparison to Dubai's construction!

Dubai land is hte next best thing.

I always said i wanted to live in Dubai. Check out their airlines:

Royal Emirates.
