Flapping Big Black Butterfly

ButtTrans2copy.jpg

Daegu, South Korea
August 22, 2006
Pentax Optio W10
f3.3@1/100
iso 64
6.3mm (widest, like ~35mm)
forced flash, macro focus, flower preset
NoiseNinja'ed, smart-sharpened, darkened, cropped quite a bit (about 1/2 of the original)

My usual trailhead is a garden on the forest's edge with lots of flowers and even more vegetables and fruit trees. After a run today, I was almost out onto the road when I spotted this big butterfly. It is about the size of a big hand.

I took lots of shots because the butterfly kept moving from flower to flower and never stopped flapping its wings, especially the upper pair. I therefore turned on the flash to freeze the motion. I was surprised to see that, in this shot, the leading edge of the flashed, moving wing took on the illusion of transparency.

It was quite a friendly seeming bug, flapping up every 10-20 seconds or so to swoop gently around my head before alighting once again to continue its nectar-lapping endeavors. After taking its picture for 5 minutes, I was quite fond of the creature.

Second Severn Crossing, between Severn Beach, in England and Magor, in South Wales. Taken last night at 9.27pm local time, about an hour after sunset.

Compression seems to have buggered up the sharpness, but there you go...

So, this was taken yesterday on my walk around my area. It was a nice day and I have some neat photos to post for the next few days. The quality is quiet bad on this because I saved it as a JPG and the quality was on 8 rather then 12, so there's a little bit less detail in it. Anyway, I still like the image.

Very nice, although the chopped hands bug me. Frame closer or wider would be my suggestion.

I would love that as a wallpaper. Great picture!

Energy manifests in manifold manners. Here, witness electricity, wind and life.

I went to sleep one night in July to the sound of torrential rain, really torrential. The next morning, by gum, it was raining even harder. "Alright," I thought, "I'm going up the mountain!"

Mustering my gear--including my Nano/ziploc/duct-tape rainy-day music system--I ran up trails-turned-rivers to find on the ridge that the wind was gusting especially strong. I found out later that I had been running in a typhoon. "Sweet!" I was so happy I had my waterproof W10 that day. I got several "keeper" extreme weather shots, and I had a good time, too. I like few things better than extreme exertion outside in extreme conditions (any B.C. treeplanters out there?).

This is a four picture stitch using "Double Take" software. I converted to b&W and tinted using the "Convert to B&W pro" plugin. Adjusting the plugin's settings gave it an infrared look.

There are two crossings about a mile apart. The suspension bridge and the older of the two used to be the M4 crossing until the new cable-stayed crossing (about a mile south, and which my picture is of) was built, whereupon they re-routed the M4 and made the old crossing a spur off the M4, renaming it the M48. :)

Got a little distortion there. Try a longer focal length. The distortion combined with up nostril angle doesn't make a very flattering photo.

I like the distortion, I doubt it was an accident. I like the background too, I wonder if she were off to one side or the other (rather than dead center) if it might open up and have a little more "environmental" feel to it?

Nice work,

First post for picture of the day

Playing with my new camera at Lost Lake, Mount Hood, Oregon, at around 5:30am. A forest fire is burning the other side of the mountain, hence the haze - normally the mountain is crystal clear. No significant photoshop tweaking done, the color is as recorded.

Interesting. You really do post some interesting things from over in Korea. :) Been there, but I don't see things with an eye as good as yours. Food was good, though. ;)
