X5. Lexus's are just like Toyota's. Boring as hell in the looks and driving experience.
Sigh. So tired of this overly general attitude (not with you in particular). I don't know if you ever take cars to the track, but I do. My good buddy recently got an IS-F for his birthday (also has a Supra TT). We often switch cars and the thing is just as fun to drive as my M3. It's also probably one of the most exhilarating cars to throw into a corner, as it's got a lot of weight to it but is well balanced, so you can do some pretty crazy things while still in the realm of control. It's not as composed on the road as the E92 M3, but on the track it's almost as good, if not more fun. The M3 is more of a scalpel, while the IS-F is like a sledgehammer. His Supra is just ridiculous, but I'm sure you all already know that.
Anyways, BMW/Audi
do make more exciting cars. I would know. I learned to drive in an E39 M5 (my dads) which was the best car I've ever driven. I still drive it some times but we've got it in storage now in lieu of the new one. Since then I've always had an M3 or M5 to take to the track.
So you could imagine the disappointment when I drove regular 3 and 5 series for the first time. Unless you're driving an M variant, they all feel the same. The 3 and 5 series are just as boring/exciting as Camry SE-V6's/GS's. A 335i and S4 aside, unless you're going to take your cars to the track, it's the driver that stipulates the fun in the car. Sure the bimmers can haul a bit more ass around a corner at the limit, but again, if you're ruling out an entire make of car due to the speed you can carry down a highway offramp for 11 seconds, go ahead. In the realm of everyday driving you're not going to notice it unless you drive so dangerously that you'd probably lose your license before you had any fun. If you can't have the same amount of fun in an ES/GS then
you are the problem. If you ARE taking your car to your track, you don't get a non-M or non-Audi RS variant (if you must, skip over the E92 and get an E46 M3, or else you're not really in it for the fun). The M cars are made for fun, as the IS-F is. Even the difference between a 335i and IS350 is negligible (read any car magazine for information).
I've driven a 550i and GS back to back (at the Taste of Lexus event) and the GS struck me as much better overall vehicle (although it was a 350 not a 460, so I couldn't really compare the power). In terms of looks, if you compare a Corolla to a E9x 3 series, yes the bimmer is going to be better looking. However, throw that E92 up against an IS350 and it's not so simple. I drove an ES350 in highschool and I was told it looked really sharp all the time. This is way more subjective, and I personally know a lot of people that prefer the Lexus appearance to the BMW appearance (when similarly equipped of course!)
I don't know everyones position on cars, but I always notice people who say "OH LAWD TOYOTAS BE SO BORIN'!" really never do anything exciting with their cars anyways. They always conveniently forget Toyota makes off road vehicles which can be considered to be wwwwwaaaayyy less boring than any BMW (especially the SUV's). The X5 will get stuck on moist pavement, while the 4runner and FJ could probably take you through the Amazon if you wished. Well, not really, but they renowned for their off road abilities (Land Cruiser anyone?) People always forget Toyota makes extremley capable off road vehicles. Legendary capability, even. I do a lot of off roading as well, and I think it's just as fun as a track. You can't offroad in
any BMW.
For what it's worth, my dad has an M5 and my mom has a GS. I actually prefer the interior of Lexus models as opposed to BMW's. BMW's seem too hard and cold. Not to mention the iDrive is balls to operate on the go. My sister actually had a 2009 X5 (was totalled by a drunk driver), and the interior seemed a bit dated (it was a nice vehicle, though), but I've never seen the interior of an RX in person so I can't really comment. So, to summarize, I am a BMW fanboy, and I'm sure their best cars (M variants) are a wee bit better than the F variants from Lexus (that may just be my fanboy talking), but people
need to stop discounting Lexus as a fun brand. Sure, the reputation was deserved at one point, but not anymore. Just look at Hyundai and their old stigma with crappy cars (now they make some of the best) to see the example of such a shift.
I know, I know. Cool story bro
