I was actually disappointed seeing the rMBP for the first time. This is in no way iPad 2 to iPad 3 improvement. As some other posters have said, at a normal viewing distance it's hard to tell, especially if you are used to hi-res display. At 1440x900 there was a difference to be sure, but at 1680 or especially at 1920, nothing special. Coupled with really un-Apple-like responsiveness issues, the whole experience left me cold.

1. The rMBP does faster calculations than the 17 inch - new, faster processor, faster ram and SSD.

2. They can't continue to make it as they already stopped making it. Best they could do is START making it. And they won't.

Tim, another one of your sheep needs their Kool-Aid refilled.

I have come to the conclusion that Apple could put a tiny screen door on a product, tell people it makes their MBP run cooler, and people would defend it to the death...

Both were irrefutable statements of absolute FACT. Are you so monumentally stupid as to claim the rMBP (and the current 15 MBP for that matter) doesn't have a faster processor and RAM than the discontinued 17" MBP? Are you claiming that SSDs aren't faster than traditional hard drives? Are you claiming the 17" HASN'T been discontinued?

Better a sheep than a blithering idiot.

Seriously?

The retina display quality is superior in EVERY way. Non-retina displays including the 2011 17" glossy mbp looks like your looking at a screen through grease stained windows in comparison.

LOL... you seriously need you eyes checked!

The 17" screen is very very good!

Honestly, coming from a 17in (now retina) there is not much difference in day to day usage. The 17 really has a great screen, if they made a slimmer 17in with the same screen I would have chosen it over the rmbp.

"Matt" with a capital M is typically short for Matthew

matt however is English for matte :D

Like I said, look it up in a dictionary. Matt is a variant of 'matte'. Matte is the 'original' (so to say) way of spelling it.

Depends on your settings, how far away from the display you are looking, etc. I for one can't tell the difference between the resolution between a 17" and a retina from normal viewing distance.

i"Fanboy" indeed. A lot of the retina's advantages are very subjective.

I think someone's jealous

That's cute :D

Don't worry, I'm not going to continue this discussion. After all, I can't force you to be right :)

No Problem. Enjoyed the sparring. After all I can't force you to be English. I think we tried that already and you've spent 239 years taking out on the tea :)

This thread is becoming hot ... open doors and windows to make room for the expanding egos

It's ok. The Ego has landed.

The picture quality on the MBPr is fantastic by the way. I'm comparing directly to a 17" Antiglare MBP and the MBPr is very very good indeed.

You know there are engineers using computers too
that need speed of calculations nice pictures land scape and more
so for me the RMBP is useless I like my 17"MBP as is hope Apple will continue to make it if not, I will have to go back to IBM thinkpad

I hate to break it to you, but Thinkpads are no longer made in 17"--the biggest they make now is 15.6", at least for the US:

Lenovo does have a 17.3" laptop, but it isn't a Thinkpad.
