I ran Lightroom and export and seemed quick but my cpu was so low running way under 2.9 and I don't understand it even as idle with nothing open the ram was maxing out and cpu went so low can anyone help that understands this, I thought the patch would fix this it is quite hot in my room but then can't be right
[doublepost=1533346531][/doublepost]even under no load nothing running its stable at 1.30 I thought it should be 2.9ghz
[doublepost=1533346886][/doublepost]also while rendering 4k video its stable on 2.10 why not 2.9 i9

hm.. did you think about searching or browsing recent posts in this thread before starting yet another "my i9 is not running fast" thread? This has been discussed in last few weeks soooo many times. Start here:

Partial solution is install OSX update which Apple issued recently. Improves the situation. But general consensus is, that desktop is the only really high performance solution due to this tiny problem called "physics" and related thermal management...

I have the updated patch this is with it installed is there a reason why its so low
[doublepost=1533348238][/doublepost]I understand under load it wont go high but doing nothing ans getting 1.6ghz it should be stable at 2.9 why does the i9 have higher option if it runs so low its hot yes but i thought i should be getting clock speed
[doublepost=1533348302][/doublepost]Apart from clock speed what advantage does the i9 have over the i7

Please can you post screenshots of the part where you’re stressing the CPU.

As @patchedreality said, this is most likely normal. Perform a complex task and record your data. If the machine is idling it will have a low clock speed. My CPU is alternating between 1ghz and 1.3ghz while I type this. Boosts to 4ghz on load. (i7-6700k).

Indeed, low idling speeds are to conserve battery and keep things cool when not needed.

Not sure about the 2.1 when encoding, but I believe h265 encoding is mostly hardware accelerated so not needing full cpu usage, this could be why that's not going full speed, but that would require further testing of some sort.

Agree w all who replied. CPU power is on demand like cars with many cylinders that shut some off when that much power isn’t being demanded.

None of the screenshots shown actually have your CPU loaded. As most people have mentioned, this keeps battery usage and heat low. When the CPU needs more it will get back to base frequency.

Your CPU is not being used in any of your screenshots, so it clocks itself down. This is normal, expected behaviour.

Thank you I didn't know that ill do some testing and get back to you but i appreciate the feedback

If your CPU is not under load, it will reduce to 1.X GHz to save power. This is normal as f.

so I have been doing loads of stress tests with the i9 32gb ram and encoding a 4k video to pro res my cpu was going so low even hitting 2.1 this can't be right for the i9 2.9 can it???

is this good or bad?
[doublepost=1533513063][/doublepost]sorry im not an expert on these tests, just wanna know is this good or bad as tomorrow is my last time to keep or change the MacBook, thanks for all your feedback

I think your machine is perfectly fine. Appears to be in line with other reported statistics.

Whats the advantage of the i9 tho cos even doing 4k rendering it doesn't stay at base 2.9 if it's gonna go down and not go into boost clock would i7 2.6 make a difference maybe would get higher click speed

Since you ignoring several answers about it being normal because utilization is low, what exactly is it you are looking for?
Seems to me you purchased more than you need and are seeing the proof in your tests. Your thread title is misleading by the way.

Well. I can't answer that for you. Some people will see benefit from the i9 depending on their workflow. My workflow is white intensive for 3d work and I plan on buying one of these new MBPS very soon and will mostly like get the 2.2 or maybe the 2.6. reason being is diminishing returns of the i9 due to the poor chassis design of the mbp.

I mean I wanna know why the i9 is so low the i7 2.6 would hit higher cpu so what I feel a diff with the i9

Dan, I mean with respect but I know you have been following all the main threads. The biggest problem with the i9 is power requirements and the current chassis of the MBP is not capable of efficiently cooling these chips.

Would you so go for i7 2.6 cos it would run faster than the i9 with higher cpu boost speeds sorry for so many questions i just wanna make sure the i9 is better at something or is it a waste of money tomorrow i have to make my mind up

It's ok, don't be sorry! This is a large investment in a laptop. Personally for heavy 3d use I will be looking at the 2.2 and 2.6 seriously. I'm leaning towards the 2.2 just to keep thermals down but if there isn't a massive disparity between it and the 2.6, then I may opt for that.

As others have stated you would probably be ok with a 2.6 or even a 2.2. I'd recommend saving your money, but that's just me. The i9 doesn't seem worth it with the current chassis design, but others will argue against that.
