Took this at a local lake this afternoon. Again, I am amazed at the dynamic range of this phone (12PM). The lake is still frozen and blinding white (as is the background sky) and yet all the detail in the rock is there to see.

I feel like the focus is not the best as most probably I should have moved away a bit more. However given that it is a phone it could have been worse

That focus looks amazing, won’t find a better portrait photo on any other smartphone than the 12 pros.
Interestingly I did not use portrait mode on the second photo. I locked manually the focus and the exposure on that photo. I would have liked if I had one or two more leaves in focus aside of the first ones. The portrait however could not capture what I wanted and wanted me to move away which would have screwed up the composition/framing I wanted.

The first one indeed is a portrait photo but I manually changed the F point to 16 as otherwise it would not focus everything I needed.

Nevertheless IMO this are still awesome pictures considering that they are taken with phones and not a DSLR/mirrorless with macro or 35 mm lens.

Really like your sewing machine photos. Nice composition and detail. Nicely done!
Thank you for the compliment. I think this was my first studio style session with an iPhone. With Apple ProRAW, I can now venture into new territory. I love shooting with my iPhone more than I do with my Sony A7RIII

thanks again

Does shooting in Apple Raw make a big difference in the result pics, other than the non destructive editing?
I have seen a big difference. I’ve always shot raw with my Sony cameras, shooting raw on the iPhone feels the same. I can control my highlights and shadows better. Also the image is cleaner, no compression like a jpeg & watercolor look I sometimes get especially on clouds and trees / grass. I save my raw files as a jpeg at 100% quality from Lightroom mobile and they look great.

I’ve shot raw using other apps and there is now comparison when using ProRAW. ProRAW also includes the deep fusion to clean up the image more. ProRAW is all I shoot with now, I love it. It really makes a big difference when shooting ProRAW with night mode. The sky and stars are much clearer and cleaner.

Now the deep fusion and smart HDR jpeg images are good, but if you blow the highlights they can’t be recovered. Have you had a lot of experience using raw? I use Lightroom mobile exclusively because it works best compared to the other editing apps I have used. I pay the $4.99 / month to unlock all of the Lightroom mobile features and have purchased presets and made my own. I take a lot of photos on my iPhone... more than my Sony.

Apple ProRAW has changed my photos forever! I’m very passionate about photography. The new iPhone and Apple ProRAW are a game changer for me. I’ve added some samples from raw files, plus two photos by Austin Mann of the Milky Way and he shot jpeg and ProRAW. You can see that the raw is much clearer. I took the raw shot of Orion with the tree tops on a dark road. The candle shot was raw also, all saved as jpeg. Can I help with anything else? Let me know if I can. Need more samples?

Thks for the comments . The night shots are amazing...ok so did you do that? I suppose having stars in the sky would help.

Here are a few Of my night shots of Miami skyline and ocean. The 1st uses a black and white and hdr effect . But they are all night shots.

You are welcome for the comments no problem. I like seeing people getting passionate about iPhone photography in general. The shot that I have with the stars in the sky with the outer most band of the Milky Way near the constellation of Orion was taken on a dark road here in Texas in between Chester and Woodville. (The other two Milky Way shots were taken by Austin Mann who is a photographer that reviewed the iPhone 12 Pro Max before it was released. It is quite dark and I set my iPhone on a tripod with a bracket to hold the phone and used the maximum night mode and exposure time of 30 seconds to obtain that photograph. Then I ran it through light room with a custom preset that I have for the night sky. And what I mean by custom preset is that I adjusted the settings where I liked them and created a preset for it. I really like that black-and-white photo you have, very detailed and clean.
One thing different that I did to create some presets for my 12 pro and 12 pro max were to take Rall photos with the 1X and 2.5 X cameras and airdrop them in Rall DNG format to my desktop computer and use the light room to process that image, then I applied those same settings to my phone and created a preset so everything will look clean and sharp and not over processed. Not sure why I didn’t do that sooner. LOL.

I live in a fairly light polluted area and although some stars do show up on my night mode images, having a dark sky really does help. I always carry my mini tripod and iPhone camera bracket to use whenever I’m in a dark location where I can quickly pull over and take some shots. if you’re interested you can send me a message where we can discuss this further. Anyway all of the photos you posted look really cool. ProRaw with night mode really is a game changer for me with the iPhone for sure.
For example, here are a couple of samples using presets that I made for the images. I don’t know how sharp they look posted on this thread, but I’m sure it’s not as good as looking at the original file.

Hi Todd

Okay so night mode max time on iPhone 12 max is 10 seconds . And your using a tripod.

Rall photos - so your taking a photo you like and then importing into Lightroom to analyze its features and applying that to a saved filter?

Not sure if I have that right ?

The maximum exposure time with the iPhone 12 Pro Max & 12 pro is 30” on a tripod. Handheld only gets you 10” maximum.

For the RAW photos, I was putting them on my desktop (iMac) computer to edit them on a big screen so they will look their best. The settings I used in Lightroom on my desktop computer were set in Lightroom mobile on my iPhone. This way I know the photos will look great on a larger monitor. Satisfied with my results, I created a preset so I could quickly apply those settings to every RAW photo I import into Lightroom. I then add filters or color grading etc. Get yourself a small tripod and iPhone mount (if you don’t already have one) to use for up to 30” in night mode.
