computer science is probably ok in most cases

True.

I have seen guys that could write in machine code that were probably certifiable.

It's true .... there is a fine line between genius and insanity.

Plus, we never allowed them out in public, unless accompanied by a designated drinker from the sane pool. :)

Personally the fake nail extensions bother me more than any tattoos and piercing.
In my work place tattoos and piercing are fine as long as there is no racist/sexist content to the tattoos

But fake nails and long unmanaged hair/dreadlocks and forget getting a job here.

I work in what I consider a very casual office. I see piercings and tattoos all the time and some of us show up in shorts and sandals on a regular basis. Still, anyone stupid enough to show up at an interview with bits of metal in their face is definitely starting off at a disadvantage, especially a new grad with no real work history. As a job applicant, expect that more conservative is better.

My company's policies are simple: no piercings, tattoos, obvious fake nails or non-conservative colours, for the men no hair over the ears or over the collar, for women the hair cannot be over the collar and only 1 pair of silver stud earrings.

Sounds like a pretty conservative place. All of the women are required to have hair above the collar? May I ask what industry you work in?

Sounds like the Army.

Or perhaps McDonald's.

Men
A clean and well-cared-for appearance should be maintained. Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, revealing, or form fitting. Shorts must be knee-length or longer. Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extreme styles or colors, and trimmed above the collar, leaving the ear uncovered. Sideburns should not extend below the earlobe or onto the cheek. If worn, moustaches should be neatly trimmed and may not extend beyond or below the corners of the mouth. Men are expected to be clean-shaven; beards are not acceptable. Earrings and other body piercing are not acceptable. Shoes should be worn in all public campus areas.

Women
A clean and well-cared-for appearance should be maintained. Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, strapless, backless, or revealing; has slits above the knee; or is form fitting. Dresses, skirts, and shorts must be knee-length or longer. Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extremes in styles or colors. Excessive ear piercing (more than one per ear) and all other body piercing are not acceptable. Shoes should be worn in all public campus areas.

I think that if all of your tattoos can be covered up by a long-sleeve dress shirt and a pair of pants, you should be fine. It's pretty evident that facial piercings are generally not accepted in the professional world. I stretched my ears to a 2 gauge or 6.5 mm. I took them to let them close up. The holes are obviously still there. My concern is that the holes in my ears will prevent me from getting an internship. Any thoughts?
