I don't think it's going to be an OS dependent feature. I haven't heard any of the people testing iOS 4.1 mention anything about Ping. If it was dependent on iOS 4.1 then we would have heard about it prior to today.

It has nothing to do with being dependent on an OS version. It has to do with the fact that Apple doesn't put out updates for their stock apps on the App Store and that feature isn't built into 4.0. There's no way for it to get on your device without you updating, which means going to 4.1.

Then why hasn't anyone who has the 4.1 GM seen ping?

that's what i thought, thus i was puzzled

the obviously hid the feature, apple have done this before on unannounced features before, nothing new. game center wasn't hidden as it was announced long ago

sounds like it'll be added to 4.1 when it's released next week. should be interesting.

It's coming on 4.1. When's the last time you saw a stock iPhone app get an update through the App Store? Never!

actually the itunes, app store, ibooks .apps run over the cloud so apple can change the app any time they like. for example when 3.0 came out, the app store added the "genius" tab without upgrading to 3.0

SJ has even said this not so long ago

Yep, and also the first day that 3.0 was out, you could reorder/change the tabs at the bottom (like in the iPod app). And then a few hours later that was removed remotely.

that was not a stock iPhone app tho, it was an optional download from iTunes....

Which I think Ping will be, I don't believe it will become a stock app as others have become. iBooks was never made into a stock app. like iTunes and the App Store were, but hell that's just my 2 cents.

ping is part of itunes, ibooks was just pointing out that some apple apps aren't stock and get updated via app store rather than being updated via OS update....

It's not.

As noted by others, a lot of the iTunes Store (and App Store) interface is controlled by the store itself.

The functionality is probably in the 4.1 release, but it hasn't yet been activated.

Doubt it would be in 4.1 as then iPhone 2G and iPod Touch 1st gen users would be **** out of luck. I would have thought Apple would make an individual app just for Ping, but I guess not.
