ping is part of itunes, ibooks was just pointing out that some apple apps aren't stock and get updated via app store rather than being updated via OS update....

That's right, never thought about it in that regards. The more I think hear about it seems like it will become a stock app.

Doubt it would be in 4.1 as then iPhone 2G and iPod Touch 1st gen users would be **** out of luck. I would have thought Apple would make an individual app just for Ping, but I guess not.

Ping isn't exactly Oxygen.

Those users can still use it in iTunes 10 on their computer.

It's not like their device will stop working.

As noted on:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/ping/

"Ping is built into the iTunes app on iPhone and iPod touch. So you can see artist updates from anywhere."

As shown on:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/software-update/

Ping is listed as an iOS 4.1 feature and is shown as being a tab in iTunes on iPhone.

The original iPhone and iPod touch have far bigger issues (like the PDF flaw that Apple wont be fixing) than missing new features.

It's coming on 4.1. When's the last time you saw a stock iPhone app get an update through the App Store? Never!

Actually they have added bottom tabs to the iTunes Store (and I also believe the App Store too) over the air without even updating the iOS and they removed the tab a few hours or days after. It was the redeem tab. They took off the tab and added it to the bottom of the music screen.

I don't think it's going to be an OS dependent feature. I haven't heard any of the people testing iOS 4.1 mention anything about Ping. If it was dependent on iOS 4.1 then we would have heard about it prior to today.

No Ping in the GM seed, sorry.

I am going to assume that the iPod or iPhone checks with the server or something to see if Ping is enabled (turned on by Apple?) and then the app loads it. It is probably built into the 4.1 iTunes.app but not enabled by default, or user enable-able.

You were saying?

EDIT: After rereading the post, you technically weren't fully wrong because they didn't update it through the app store. They did, however, update it over the air without a full iOS update.
