Could ya comment on the touch screen? IM considering paying the $500 more for the capacitive screen.

It's pretty good. It's got easy and accurate calibration. That said, CarPlay may use capacitive touch "features" such as multi-touch.

I really like the 4000NEX. I've used it extensively with Waze over the last few weeks.

I would imagine though, that CarPlay is built for resistive touch displays as it will have to work with several OEMs that do NOT currently use capacitive touch displays.

I wonder if the capacitive touch screen may be even more reflective than the touch screen currently in the 4000NEX. The 4000NEX needs to be pretty heftily tilted to avoid mid-day screen washout. The benefit of the 4000NEX though, is it's the most solid feeling deck while tilted I've ever used. It's rock solid during button presses even at full tilt. However, if the capacitive touch is any glossier it would potentially be useless on bright days.

Keep in mind I am at a Northern Latitude which has worse glare than closer to the equator.

I hope that we see a release of the firmware update for CarPlay coinciding with WWDC and the release of an open API for CarPlay. That way hopefully we'll see Waze and other apps supported through CarPlay.

The hardware requires only a firmware update that is expected to be available in "a few weeks", putting the company on or even slightly ahead of its original "early summer" schedule.

It's been a few weeks. My 4000nex is installed and ready. Let's go :D

The nav unit in my new 2015 WRX sucks balls so I'm planning on swapping it out for a NEX unit but waiting for some reviews on Pioneer's implementation of CarPlay before I pull the trigger. Hope they release the update soon.

I'm with you on this. I paid almost $2600 to install the system in my Mercedes. Words of wisdom: if your car has a fiber optic stereo system you cannot tie this in without putting in all new amplifiers. I thought no big deal, $700-$1000 to install 4000NEX and a backup camera for good measure, but it was actually almost $2600 once it was installed. My Benz has the factory fiber optic Harmon Kardon system so it required amps and at least a 6 channel amp to retain the center 5.1 dash speaker. BE MINDFUL of this before ordering! Bring on the effing firmware update already!

I got my NEX 5000 ready to go.

The units are a lot cheaper off Amazon than the MSRP prices people are using to trash talk the units.

Why are we still waiting??? I had my NEX system installed weeks ago. I'm getting impatient.

According to some article I read online, the software update is ready and its waiting for Apple's green light.
So it might be Apple's fault and not Pioneer's.

Pioneer not being genuine

I can't believe pioneer said a few weeks so long ago. Very poor performance of them. I purchased a car stereo based on this assurance and still nothing. "Early summer" and "in a few weeks", right.

I was initially going to spring for the 4000, but after a little bit of patience, I scored an 8000 on Craigslist for only $650.00. Quite the deal, but not the only one. I have seen them recently going for as low as $500. You just have to be on the ball to be the first to grab it.

In comparing the two different screens, I can say without hesitation that the 8000 capacitive screen is way better. The overall brightness blew me away the first time it was fired up and I haven't had an issue with glare since. I'm not using a screen protector, although I have thought about putting one on. Only downside to this display is that it is not removable as it is on the lower end models. In short, I love it. That's really the only reason to go with the 8000 I think. Pioneer's navigation is not known for being the best, and I will probably end up using Apple's Maps app as that been getting better by the day. Once CarPlay does get released, I'll probably forgo using Pioneer's interface in favor of Apple's the majority of the time anyway.

I am however growing impatient with Apple's inability to get the approval taken care of - hard to be mad at Pioneer, even though they did make the claim of "just a few weeks."

Tick ... tick ... tick ... Any updates on this?

Only vague statements from Pioneer on twitter that imply they're waiting for Apple to approve the completed firmware. If that's true I wonder if they make us wait till after iOS 8.

Emailed pioneer over the weekend and got a nice reply:

Thank you for contacting Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.

There is not an exact ETA. It was announced as Summertime and has not
changed.
I would expect it to be released within the next month or so.
Registered owners should receive an e-mail notification.

Which is nice because pioneers announcement said "early summer". And CS says it will be ready by about september and "has not changed".... awesome.

I'm not feeling optimistic about this anymore. By the time this is released pioneer will have moved on to next years models and leave the adopter models in the dust.... i'm starting to wish i didn't buy this 4000nex unit now... i would waited for the 2015 models at this rate.

@TheArkiPlan Best guess at the moment is early August. We're genuinely very sorry about this, but we can't release without Apple approval

Never buying Pioneer again. They definitely scammed us into buying these receivers.

Too bad Pioneer can't plan the release date without apple approval too huh????? That's probably what has me most steamed. "Buy pioneer- if you don't get what we advertised it as- blame someone else"

i wish ford would get off the horrendous MS Sync feature. we love our car in every way except that. would love the ability to install CarPlay...or really, just about any other system.

Really? I have a 2012 Edge and absolutely love my MSSync. As far as I can tell it does everything CarPlay can. I can push a button on the steering wheel and make calls/texts, it reads incoming texts and gives the option to reply with a text, call them back or ignore, plays my music (although I don't use this often, I have Sirus radio most of the time), the nav is ok, I've tried it concurrently with my iPad and it actually did a bit better. My only issue is that you can't 'redo' the nav while the car is moving, even if you're a passenger. I'm guessing that's a safety thing.

What am I missing?

As for the topic, sounds like an expensive option but if I had an older car that I loved I would spring for it. Since getting a hands-free car I must say I won't ever go back to not having it. We usually by older cars and drive them until the 'wheels fall off' (my husband loves cars and working on them). I would definately install an after market device. But it must be OS agnostic. I won't let the type of phone I have dictate my car choice.

Still wating...

I just got my 5000 installed today and was hoping for carplay to be up and ready. Technically summer isn't over for another month, so there is hope.

Pioneer just issues new press releases with new dates as it suits them, and pretends that was the date all along..... Im very sure that Pioneer will be on schedule no matter how late they release carplay.... lol... What a joke.

The original word was "CarPlay compatibility will be available in early summer 2014."

"WILL BE". "EARLY SUMMER".

Every time i think about not having this damn update i get pissed off all over again about it.

As I've said elsewhere, this is an Apple delay. I'm sure Pioneer was given assurances and they have submitted the firmware to Apple. No cars have Carplay right now because Apple has not allowed it to be released. I'm just as frustrated as anyone else, but right now this is turing into a bigger "epic fail" than MobileMe!

I've read in other forums that the delays have tied to the third party app support and ironing out all the wrinkles with the first generation of supported apps - MLB, Spotify, etc.

You can't really blame the car companies, they are at the mercy of Apple. And we all know that Apple tries its very best to not release products before they are ready (with the exception of MobileMe, Maps, etc). And I think with CarPlay being such a niche right now, it's just not getting the attention in the press like a another delayed piece of hardware would.

While frustrated I invested in a new stereo, I am confident that when it arrives, it will "just work."
