Hey guys

How does PIP work with YouTube? Does it work? Is this going to be a workaround for background playback?

you either need to pay for youtube red, jailbreak youtube app, or use a browser and then you can use youtube pip, sad how youtube forces apple users to pay for pip on the app; but on old phone Galaxy s8 I am able to use PIP without paying for Youtube Red

So the PIP in iOS14 doesn't do YT videos?

Well, for me there is only youtube premium, and it dos not give you PiP, so the only way is the browser. (Or jailbreak? I don’t know about that)

I have never been able to make PiP function on Android either for the free YouTube version. How do you do it (I have a Sony running Pie if that matters) ?

Looks like it does via Safari

I'm sure they'll try and get around it to push people to Premium but if it's baked into iOS not sure how they can restrict it

Edit: you can also push the video off to the side so you get background audio:

They've had ages to do that for iPad since that got PiP, and it's not there for premium, so I doubt iOS14 is going to change that.

And even better with an Adblocker!

Hey guys

What I did was create bookmarks for my most watched youtube videos in Safari but added them to the home screen instead. I click on the home screen shortcut, it launches that youtube video in Safari, I swipe to the home screen and Voila! PIP video.

Has anyone tried Pipifier with the Youtube website in Safari on ios14?
No I haven’t had a chance to install on my tester yet, but I was just going to recommend that app. Pipifier is excellent on the iPad. You use the share sheet on Youtube in Safari and “run Pipifier” and it goes PiP with full functionality as intended in the OS integration.

Pipifier is great! I so wish it was available on the iPhone

A couple of seconds after I choose PIP in youtube in Safari, playback hangs, and youtube won't play at all unless I reload Safari.

There isn't really any need for PiPifier. If for some reason the PiP button isn't showing by default you can full screen any video in Safari and go to Pip from there.

You can just full screen the YouTube video in Safari and then swipe up to close the app. PiP will enable automatically. No need for third party apps
