It would likely allow devs to expand and push the boundaries of what could be accomplished on an iPhone.
That is what I would love to see. But does EU law go far enough to create the conditions for that outcome? Microsoft doesn’t seem to think so.

One thing to remember is the app selection in the App Store is artificially constrained by Apple’s moral stance and the desire to control the landscape. Heaven forbid if the OS becomes a commodity. Then there is the financial aspect.

Other stores would be driven by other guiding principles. It would likely allow devs to expand and push the boundaries of what could be accomplished on an iPhone.
I happen to like that moral stance being applied. And apple doesn’t want (imo) to be associated with drug apps, porn apps, etc. I support their right to fleece their customers and their customers to vote with their $$$ to buy one of the hundreds of competitors.

You can apply your own morals to your own device. Because I just so happen to like no particular moral stance being applied to my devices against my will.

Then you don’t buy. Are you going to buy a Honda civic and demand that Honda be able to put in an M5 engine? Are you going to buy a led tv and demand the manufacturer allow a user replaceable oled option?

Or are you going to buy what has the most positives and the least negatives?

I’m pretty sure the answer is going to be, when it comes to apple I want the government to regulate them so their devices meet my requirements.

To use your own phrase, I don't like to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
That’s not an appropriate analogy for that aphorism. Throwing the “baby out with the bath water” is when you make a specific case into the general case.
I have other Apple devices. I like the iPhone. And now I get to have the option to install other apps on it.
Great. Still under apple review of some sort. Still have to ensure the App Store is legit. And still a CTF. But yeah you get to install whatever exists outside of the app store.
Shame some people don't understand the meaning of options...
Shame people want more and more government intervention.

Shame people want more and more government intervention.

This is just an opinion….
I don’t think people want more Government intervention. However the options are extremely minimal outside of the Government. Other than “don’t buy it”, what other options are available to a customer in a two option world?

It’s as much as opinion as the “power to the people” legislation the DMA is.

While that may be also true, that's not only true. But we're arguing semantics.

No one wants to strip you of the App Store, we just want other options.

Why is it even a talking point again?
You're the one making the point that you trust a random app from a third party store that requires jailbreaking and that's somehow more reliable than me trusting iOS from a trillion dollar company that's at risk of public image fallout if they didn't try to secure their devices that they're selling. Are you not getting how ridiculous that is?

Don't put words into my mouth I didn't say. I said I'd rather download a developer I trust's app from wherever than download some random developer's possibly malicious app from Apple's ostensibly vetted App Store.

I said I trust iOS. Talk about not putting words in my mouth I didn't say. 🤣

Sorry, but you're not going to convince me that trusting a developer from an unvetted source is somehow better than trusting Apple's engineers. That's just nonsense. I think we're done here.

Absolutely. Whether you are downloading from an official App Store or an alternative , iOS or Android, it pays to do a bit of research before you install. To blindly says you trust Apple or Google engineers (these guys don’t write the apps) is disingenuous.

This process has served me well and kept my stuff safe in both iOS and Android.

I don't see where I said you did? Do you feel personally attacked or something?

Never wanted to convince you of that. I'm fine in my own convictions.

Then you didn't search good enough. Just check out @applearcadeipa on Telegram ;)
"with low to no effort"

"didn't search good enough"

🤣 sorry but if I have to download an app and search again, that already isn't low effort.
