As another user said.... YES you are. If you can't tell retina from non-retina, you need some glasses. Any app designed for retina sticks out like a big, sore, retina thumb.

Haha, so I need glasses? I can notice the retina on the iPad and iPhone but the macs already HAD a great screen in my eyes. I haven't used the MBPR that much in the store, i just looked at it and tried some apps.

This is THE Mac app to get

Im a Mac/iPhone user (and iOS dev), and I'm one of those people that don't like to spend a lot on apps. I occasionally buy a $.99 app for the iPhone, but usually not. (even all of my apps are free). But this is the app to get. There is almost nothing that photoshop can do that this can't. It is a great deal. The devs have constant updates, which is just awesome.

The Is It Tuesday? App

Wow 15 bucks is a steal! I payed through the teeth. I bought the retail disc years ago, and then upgraded to the mac store app before a major overhaul. Which they said may bring the price up. I fell for it hook line and sinker.

Sadly this latest version of Pixelmator is still broken if you are using it with Aperture, you no longer can use it as a an editor since the roundtripping doesn’t work. Furthermore autosave is still broken. What was it, 2.0.4 that introduced the new “improved workflow” that broke autosave and Aperture roundtrip editing. Spend your money on Acorn ins tea which i did.

Actually Pixelmator does work with Aperture as an external editor. All you need to do is to use Tiff (8-bit) instead of PSD.

Excellent, can't fault it for the price.

Always impressed by how quickly the app opens too, for this reason I use it more than photoshop for those quick 2 min edits. :)

It's working for me as I write. What sort of editing are you trying to do that doesn't work?

Roundtripping doesn’t work, i.e. I hit “edit in pixelmator” in Apertur, it pops up Pixelmator, i edit some stuff and when i hit save it wants to save it outside the original image. So round trip editing does not work, but I’m curious, how did you manage to get that to work?

External Editor = Pixelmator
External Editor File Format = TIFF (8-bit)

For me, when I hit "edit in pixelmator" and go through the above, when I hit save and pop back into Aperture, there are my changes. Aperture 3.3.2, Pixelmator 2.1

Exactly the same here. And it works "out of the box" from Pixelmator side.

Still no spanish translation?

I wonder why they haven´t included it yet, even more when v1 had it.

Anyone recommend this to learn a little image editing?

I use Pixelmator all the time. It is a really great application. I like how they keep it from getting bloated like Photoshop. It is a lot better experience than using Photoshop. I just wish they would add CMYK support and layer styles. That would make it a Photoshop killer. :D

I just downloaded the update and can't wait to try out the new features. I'm trying to use this software more frequently (still use an older version of Adobe CS), this saved me big time last week when a huge file crashed Photoshop repeatedly. I finished working on it in Pixelmator, --I had to go back and add some pattern fills and drop shadows which didn't convert, so when/if (I hope it's "when"!) they add Layer Styles I will be incredibly happy. This is a wonderful software program and worth every penny and more.

The problem is it needs to be completely compatible with Photoshop and Illustrator native formats. I've got too many working files to switch software. Yes, it can probably do JPG and such but that's not where the work is.

I don't know about .ai files as I've never tried, but I've opened a lot of .psd files in Pixelmator.

The problem is that not all layer effects convert. I downloaded a bunch of Quartz filters for Pixelmator so had no difficulty in adding back drop shadows and things. Adding patterns and gradients back? Not quite as quick as a filter, but not too bad. Yes, it's annoying to have to go back and add the stuff that was dropped if the file had over 20 layers, but I found that doing it the second time looked better anyway. That said, I really, REALLY hope the Pixelmator team adds Layer Styles in the near future.

Truly weird, I’ve tried every combination under the known sun and even got the comment from the pixelmator guys that the “improved workflow” they introduced in 2.0.4 doesn’t work with Aperture.

If you won’t mind, could you hit

defaults read com.pixelmatorteam.pixelmator

in terminal and tell me what it says, there has to be a difference.

Attachment is here:View attachment pm2.1.txt. I changed a few names of directories to protect the innocent.

The pixelmator folks did say they fixed that in 2.0.5. From their release notes:

• Resolves an issue that prevented using Pixelmator as an external editor in iPhoto and Aperture

I do recall having the same issue you did with at least one earlier version and some combo of Aperture and PM updates seemed to fix it, and it works well (for me) now. As you say, gotta be a difference somewhere on your system.

now, if only they would do important stuff like getting rid of their reliance on OS X's crappy color picker we might be in business.

I have found this app to be really buggy at the simplest things like loading and saving documents and in general it has issues starting up.
