Hi, I've been following this tutorial (http://www.pxm-tuts.com/tutorials/text-effects/simple-angled-banner/) and I got stuck at a part where I have to draw a rectangle and delete it by hitting the delete button which simply doesn't do anything on my computer.

Is it even possible to delete the area selected?

Yes you should, although weirdly, I've never run across that Tool Options palette before. What happens if you select this button (below)? I always see that in my menu bar but didn't realize it detached. FWIW, when I have a selection over a rastered layer and delete, it deletes.

BTW -that PXM-tuts lesson looks like it's pretty old & using Pixelmator Chameleon -something like 2.0 (the chevron stripe on top of the tool bars). There are easier ways to do things now and you may run into other conflicts in the new software vs old Tut.

I replicated your problem and the delete button worked ok (I have Pixelmator 3.1 Marble), so I'm not sure why it hasn't worked in your case. An alternative way of deleting is to use cmd-x - have you tried that?
If cmd-x deletes the whole yellow shape (and not just the selected area) then you haven't rasterised the shape. Under the 'Layer' menu, select 'Convert into Pixels', then try your select and delete again.

What happens if you select this button (below)?

Those buttons modify the selection tool. The particular one you indicated is for subtracting from your existing selection, and will have no detrimental effect on the OP's original problem.

Thanks for all replies.

This worked for me. Converting to pixel allowed me to delete the part I wanted to be deleted.
