Photos has really a potential if only they opened this up to third party plugins. Since they killed Aperture this should be a middle ground for both pros/enthusiasts and regular users. Just imagine Lightroom and Photoshop combination but cheaper and faster.
They did. It's called Photos Extension. Pixelmator is one of those apps that supports it as said in the article.
I'm aware about that. But have you ever tried using it? It limited that's probably the reason they called it extension like for browsers. Mostly filters and some effects that's about it. Just imagine if they just opened it up like the way they did with Aperture with 3rd party plugins.

updated and tried in Photos - total fail.... not Pixelmator's fault, rather the way how extensions work, but this is pretty unusable with the exception of maybe heal tool

When Photos was launched way back and Aperture got canned I honestly thought that one day Apple will provide more or less the same Aperture functionality in Photos through extensions, now I realised that that ain't happening even if hell would freeze over...it's just not structured that way to do what Aperture did. They either seriously beef up the main Photo app or their plans that 'somehow' developers would fill the void will remain a a wishful dream.

How on earth they pitched to Cook to can Aperture (and iPhoto) and release a new app that has perhaps 20% functionality of iPhoto, parking now the technicalities of different code base, cloud functionality etc. aside, that the enthusiast/pro photography market is not worth pursuing completely escapes me. 10 years ago I got on to Mac BECAUSE of photography, got high end 17" laptop (Intel) and 23" Cinema display, later jumped on the Aperture train and drove along...today my editing software is platform agnostic and there is very little that keeps me using Mac for my photo editing, let alone consider upgrading my top of the line 15" rMBP 2014 going forward.

I doubt that Tim Cook had to be persuaded, driving away pros and hence the more demanding folks keeps engineers more engaged with the products that matter most: consumer-grade products with higher-grade margins.

The writing is on the wall: pros are dead on Mac. They still might show a pro here and there using their products to market, but what are they willing to invest really beyond some marketing to lure in semi-pros and folks whose needs are covered with what they are willing to provide?
I guess it'd take a CEO change before things get rosier, question is, is there still anyone at Apple who would try to target that audience after Apple got rid of it so smoothly without a massive backlash?
Because that's how you get rid of an audience, you don't throw them off the horse, you let them ride the aging horse until it's dead and kneeling down.

Oh hey Garageband, what's up? I see you got new loops and the remote control feature from Logic!

Answering my own question, after trying it, the new Pixelmator Quick Selection tool is quite similar to the Instant Alpha tool found in Preview, Pages, and Keynote (if you know where to look). Few seem to have discovered this tool, one of the handiest and most unsung features of these apps.

I recommend Affinity Photo over Pixelmator. I've not used Pixelmator for the last new versions but I found the way it handles filters and effects confusing. Affinity photo is more like photoshop and with affinity designer and the soon to be released Affinity Publisher, it's becoming a more and more capable image manipulation suite of apps.
I have heard about the "soon to be released Affinity Publisher" for a long time now. When is it actually going to be released? I need to replace Indesign and be done with Adobe.

Does the new version (3.5) give you the option to use a Single Window instead of multiple floating windows on the desktop.
I just rearrange the floating windows in a way that it's virtually no different from single-windowed mode. Not sure what a dedicated single-window mode would accomplish.

Time for Apple to acquire Pixelmator + name change?

Why? If they haven't by now then they probably don't want to. Besides, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple gives them money to stay exclusive.

Pixelmator with floating windows on the desktop.

Single window mode of Affinity Photo.

Single Window mode is a frequent request on the Pixelmator forums.

No.

If you need the advanced features of Affinity then why even consider Pixelmator? They're different apps for different purposes.

It's not confusing at all, it's perfect. Acorn and Affinity are much much more confusing.

Explain? Curious.

Best app in the store, I have Affinity myself, but still keep Pixelmator and use it for light edits, also it plays nice with iCloud, working between OSX and iOS is a pleasure.

If they have new version, I will buy instantly even if I don't use much, just to show my gratitude to a nice piece of app.

I always hear good things about this app, but never considered it because I have Photoshop for Mac.

Today I finally took the plunge and bought it - couldn't be happier!

I moved the other way in late 2015. I still prefer pixelmator over photoshop.

Nowhere did he said that. He merely asked whether or not Pixelmator has a single-window view similar to Affinity.

Explain? Curious.

1. You need to select extensions individually, they don't appear in a list with togethe with default Photos' settings
2. You don't see all extension effects at the same time like you see default settings, it's always only one setting at a time
3. There's no functionality to allow applying same edit to other pictures, think of 'copy&paste' for extension settings
4. Sad thing is that the underlying RAW engine has been significantly reworked, but Photos is certainly not in a state to be used with DSLR's in current form
5. Name of the app should have been Shoebox - functionality-wise I see very little difference with the actual thing... you snap pictures with iPhone, if you pay for storage it uploads and syncs across other devices, but that's all. The fact that this rather than editing, catalogue features (even with say history of when and where photo was uploaded) is not only missing, but totally butchered is amateurish at best.

Steve once said that things are packages of features and you have to make a decision which decisions to prioritise - if messed up UI, limited functionality and using iOS as the lowest common denominator is their priority, very soon Apple won't be my priority to even look at when I upgrade my system in few years... talk about not only my laptop, but few iPhones, iPads, Watch etc. On one had they boast about 5K iMac, gamut of the new DP3 screens and 10 bit support but there's no application taking advantage of it. If they had any Aperture X in place that would take use this combination of new hardware and software, then there would be a real value of of buying (i)Macs for photography - can't believe I'll write it now - but right now there isn't, maybe for bragging or show off only

I want to upgrade. I have 3.4.4 Twist. Yet the App Store has no upgrade for me. When I go to the Pixelmator page, the only choice I have is "Open", not "Download." Anybody else have problems?

I've had pixelmator for about a year, just making minor edits. I was tired of the $10 a month for photoshop.

I've browsed through the individual tutorials on the pixelmator website, but would love to follow along a more complete one. maybe where someone really works through a few major edits of an image or two. I hope that makes sense.

I'm not a power user by any means, I was curious if anyone had a good link to a comprehensive tutorial of pixelmator.

Any leads?

What I ended up doing is deleting the app and just installing the current version. So I have 3.5 now. Must be some kind of bug.
Yes, that worked! I zipped the 3.4.4 to hide it, and refused Hazel's request to dump the support files, and then the App Store said "Install", which was exactly right. Thanks for the help!
