The developers of Pixelmator are really quick. They're usually one of the first products to support anything new in Apple's OSes. Plus, Pixelmator is just an amazing graphics editing program. So much like Photoshop, but 95% cheaper. I've been using it for about 2 years now. Love it.
Also doesn't install support files all over the place like Photoshop does.

Can someone tell me if the Pixelmator extensions work in Non-Metal based Macs? I'm not able to see at the moment.
Pixelmator extensions works on all Macs with OS X El Capitan. You can enable it in System Preferences > Extensions > Photos.
You just won't have that excellent Metal GPU performance boost that newer Macs have. It will just be the same as your other extensions.

Thanks, yeah I got it to work on my 2007 iMac when I got back to my apartment. Problem is both times I tried the computer completely froze. It's probably too much for the old beast. Oh well

Does one have to purchase each new version that comes out? Or are these enhancements free updates? I am currently still using Aperture, but had my eye on Pixelmator for some time now.
Like with any app in the app store (both Mac and iOS) the updates are free but the major new versions are not because most of the companies will submit those as a new app. There is no update/upgrade option from app a to app b other than buying the new app. On iOS there is a way around it if you use a bundle with "complete this bundle" functionality (Omni Group did this for OmniFocus for iOS).
