.... You can easily substitute Photoshop (bar a few actions) but nothing really comes close to offering what Lightroom does, to photographers.Capture One?
DXO?
Darktable if you are looking to give FOSS a shot. Plus there is Photos once it replaces Aperture (and Aperture until then).
They may not be identical to LR, but certainly they come close to, or even surpass Adobe's offering depending on your needs and workflow.
It is not too difficult to find pros/enthusiasts who praise these apps over Lightroom with your favorite search engine (and those who hate them as well, you cannot please everyone).
I generally like Pixelmator and look forward to each update. Having quit Adobe cold turkey, this one was really helpful. It is not as powerful as photoshop, but it is normally good enough for what I do.

My issue is that Adobe seem to have the complete monopoly still, even though there are competitors. Whenever you talk about image modification, people always say 'Photoshop'. "Oh, that's so clearly Photoshopped." It's become part of our language, part of the dictionary. Because Adobe know people will think of their products first, they're getting sluggish with innovation and updates. Because they just don't have any real competitors. I'm really interested to see what Apple do with their Photos app. I think it will take a company far larger than Adobe to push them out of their comfort zone.

That's going to change. From now on, I'm telling people that their photos look Pixelmated. It'll catch on.
TextEditor...
I don't understand why the extension would only be for repairing... Surely some sharpening and blur would be more useful in general?
Repair Tool extension
I don't get why the repair extension is (supposedly) available in TextEdit but not in Preview. TextEdit can't even open image files. And does anyone really want to edit images in Mail? I like Pixelmator a lot and they deserve credit for being so quick to the Yosemite extension party, but the implementation is kind of puzzling.
It's so when you're working on a document, you can edit the image down without having to open it in another program and then refresh the caches. In TextEdit's case, you'd have to add it again because it self-contains everything you drag into it.
I would edit my images in mail if it had some of the other tools.
Preview doesn't give you access to extensions other than Markup. It's weird...
Preview is where I'd appreciate some extended editing tools since I already use it often as a basic image editor. Another app where this would be useful is iPhoto, but alas, no. Mail seems like the about the most illogical place to do this. I tried opening some images in TextEdit (a new experience) but they open as text files. It's got no other image editing capabilities anyway so the value having just the one, even assuming it works, is lost on me. Am I missing something?
I use Preview as a basic editor too. I have no problem opening Pixelmator though.
You're supposed to drag an image into a TextEdit document.
