Pixelmator today announced that the company's photo editing application for Mac [Mac App Store] has grossed $1 million in the 20 days since the store's debut, marking a significant milestone for the already-popular application and over $700,000 for the application's developers after Apple's 30% cut of revenue.
I am ecstatic to announce that Pixelmator grossed a gigantic $1 million on the Mac App Store. And that happened in only 20 short days.

What is even better is that the app is getting rave reviews on the Mac App Store (4.5 stars with over 275 ratings on the US store, 5 stars with over 128 ratings in the UK, and 4.5 stars with over 129 ratings in Germany). And, thanks to the Mac App Store, more people than ever are choosing to download Pixelmator.
Pixelmator currently ranks as the fourth-highest grossing app on the Mac App Store, trailing only Apple's own Aperture, iPhoto, and Pages. The application has been able to combine a relatively high sales price of $29.99 with high-volume sales that currently see the application ranked 12th among paid applications in order to reach the $1 million mark in under three weeks.

While some developers have been worried about a "race to the bottom" when it comes to pricing as has happened in many cases on the iOS App Store, the current list of top grossing apps in the Mac App Store reveals that developers can succeed by offering quality applications at price points significantly higher than those seen for iOS applications. Of the top 20 grossing applications on the Mac App Store, only Angry Birds (#5) and Braid (#16), each checking in at $4.99, carry price points below $14.99.

Pixelmator is a nice app and is disrupting PS from the bottom up. I'm not saying it's a replacement for PS yet, but for a lot of people it's good enough and the price is great.

Wow. As an iOS developer, it's success stories like these that makes developing on the mac look much more interesting. If it gets more people to start developing awesome programs for the mac, this could be one of the best things to happen to the Mac platform in years.

Pixelmator Rocks!!!

I have Aperture 3. It does most everything I want. But when I need a deeper "drawing program" with things like layering I ALWAYS use Pixelmator.

I thought for $59 it was a steal.... but for $29 it is without a doubt the most powerful and useful program (in the creative/photo category) in the history of the Mac. Yep, it's that good!!!!

5+ stars!!!

This is what happens when you have a very good product that is aggressively priced. I am sure Apple is doing a whole lot better with Aperture too at only $79.

Adobe are you listening? You could be making a killing on the Mac App Store with a more reasonably priced product. Of course, first you have to have a situation where it's so easy to buy that pricing is the only decision that needs to be made and the instant gratification urge is there. That's what the Mac App Store does for developers.

Can someone explain what Pixelmator does? It looks like a typical raster image editor to me, much like Paint.NET. (For those that don't know, Paint.NET includes Paint-like options, along with layers and various tools and effects, as well as import and export from both its native and most any other common format.) I miss such an editor on OS X, but $30 is still too expensive.

That being said, I would be nice if Mac OS still came with a simple raster editor like Paint (or, since this name probably corresponds with the last time things were such, Paintbrush).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

$1 million in revenue is lower than I thought. A lot of time and effort went into this app and we dont know what their profit is. Just revenue. Lets say they rent office space, have a designer, developer, webmaster, etc. They aren't quite getting rich in this thing. One would presume that this is the busiest time for the app store too (the launch month). And if most people are making way less...

Dont get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of what they're doing AND the app store, but I don't see Mac apps as a huge business. Outside of a browser and Office type applications, I don't see a viable business for a lot of companies. Adobe excluded.

I'd love if Apple bought pixelmator and incorporated it into iPhoto (or at least as another app in iLife)

They were already turning a profit and growing well. Cf:

Judging by their excitement, I have to imagine they are now turning a very healthy profit. Good for them! It's well-deserved. I prefer Acorn, in the end, for most of my work but Pixelmator is excellent.

I've never even heard of this (not being a Mac owner)

Is this better than Gimp then which is free?

http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/

Yes. Pixelmator doesn't rely on X11. The Gimp is "free", but it's been years since it worked reliably on the Mac. Time isn't free, and it has wasted too much of my time. People have tried to do OS X-specific ports but they're not much better.

Stability aside, it has fewer features, but includes a number of nice ones that are missing from the Gimp. It also has an overall smoother workflow, imo.

I purchased this for my 11 inch MBA and I'm glad I did! It does everything I need it to do and it saved me some money, I was about to get Photoshop. Congrats to the developers! :D

Pixelmator is a direct competitor to Photoshop, but with fewer features. It has a very similar interface for many of the features that it does share, so those comfortable with Photoshop can get up to speed with Pixelmator very quickly. The interface is nicely done, and the price is amazing. Just goes to show how outrageously-priced the Adobe apps are.

I can't answer that but it would be great if Apple included something like paint.net with the computer (ala MacPaint in the old days). Although it would have to look/act much better than paint.net. It's functional but that's as far as I'd go with paint.net.

Not quite. There are FAR more valuable features in Photoshop than this program. It's probably closer to Photoshop Elements which is only a little more expensive but does provide some things that this doesn't. Not knocking Pixelmator but let's not get silly with Photoshop comparisons (especially considering the full or extended CS version).

Oh great here comes the tidal wave of "SEE SEE???? PIXELMATOR IS BETTER THAN PHOTOSHOP!!!! I TOLD YOU SO!!!"

Oh great here comes the tidal wave of "SEE SEE???? PIXELMATOR IS BETTER THAN PHOTOSHOP!!!! I TOLD YOU SO!!!"

No way anyone in their right mind would say that.

But it is a decent alternative. Needs huge improvements though if it wants to compete.

Yay for Pixelmator. I love this app. Its much faster then Photoshop and has real time filters and I prefer it for many things but sadly I still need Photoshop for a lot of stuff like texturing 3D models and layer styles :/

I really hope Pixelmator comes out with layer styles and a pen tool. Then it will really start to give Adobe a run for its money which is GREATLY needed. Adobe has been cranking out **** as of late (CS3, CS4) although CS5 is decent. (I've been using Photoshop almost since it was originally released so I'm well aware of what I am talking about.)

Good to hear. Pixelmator is a great app with a slick mac-centric interface, Best of all is the use of mac core OS API's that make the application fast.

While not as feature packed and expandable as PS i wouldn't be surprised if in a few years the gap closes. As a professional that uses PS daily on a mac i would love to see that happen.

I'm glad there's a good alternative for non professionals who can't justify the cost of Adobe software. Congrats.
