This application is such a steal for $29.99. I'm happy for these guys.

That's what Apple does for competent developers...the world's most intuitive online display for apps (OS X or iOS alike).

I have no use for this app, but congrats anyway to the Pixelmator team for sticking with the best and making some good money out of that infrastructure..! Anything that drags Adobe's bloatware down must be a good thing... ;)

Not quite. There are FAR more valuable features in Photoshop than this program. It's probably closer to Photoshop Elements which is only a little more expensive but does provide some things that this doesn't. Not knocking Pixelmator but let's not get silly with Photoshop comparisons (especially considering the full or extended CS version).

In my opinion PixelMator is far superior to Elements. For most "simple" graphical work PixelMator is enough, but especially faster and easier than Photoshop thanks to slick UI, Mac only design and optimization.

One of the causes of the low prices on both iPhone and iPad apps is their short lifespan and limited functionality. People don't want to pay 20 dollar for an application they probably won't even be using anymore in a couple of days and that has about half the functionality a regular computer app has.

Pixelmator is a powerful application that really deserves this. I don't use it anymore myself, because it still misses some key functionality and is just not the industry standard, but as a day to day tool for people that don't want to be spending hundreds of dollars on an image-editing program this is a musthave.

I got pixelmator in Jan 2008 as part of a macheist bundle. All of the updates since then have been free, which is somewhat stunning I think. I don't use it too much. But when I do, it works just fine for what I need.

I thought this application already hit its peak market. I'd like to know more about the people making these purchases. It seems too impulsive.

It has pretty colors, that's why.
Plenty of chances to get it in a bundle with other applications. I've consider it several times but like my only bundle purchase, you never use the applications again. Why spend the money? I'd be more inclined to use Toy Viewer or Irfanview over on Windows.

Purchases are coming out of the woodwork for already red water programs.

What do you mean by this?

$1 million in revenue is lower than I thought. A lot of time and effort went into this app and we dont know what their profit is. Just revenue. Lets say they rent office space, have a designer, developer, webmaster, etc. They aren't quite getting rich in this thing. One would presume that this is the busiest time for the app store too (the launch month). And if most people are making way less...

Dont get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of what they're doing AND the app store, but I don't see Mac apps as a huge business. Outside of a browser and Office type applications, I don't see a viable business for a lot of companies. Adobe excluded.

I'd love if Apple bought pixelmator and incorporated it into iPhoto (or at least as another app in iLife)

You don't see a relatively small company making a million dollars in less than one month of the app store being open as huge business? That's a very bizarre statement.

agreed

Yay for Pixelmator. I love this app. Its much faster then Photoshop and has real time filters and I prefer it for many things but sadly I still need Photoshop for a lot of stuff like texturing 3D models and layer styles :/

I really hope Pixelmator comes out with layer styles and a pen tool. Then it will really start to give Adobe a run for its money which is GREATLY needed. Adobe has been cranking out **** as of late (CS3, CS4) although CS5 is decent. (I've been using Photoshop almost since it was originally released so I'm well aware of what I am talking about.)

I love Pixelmator for many of the reasons that people said (I got it for about $47 with the student discount a couple of years ago). When I had a scanner, Pixelmator worked flawless with Image Capture and is so fast. It does everything I would like it to do now.

$29.99, is, indeed a steal, for this nice PS alternative.

You couldn't be more wrong. I'm run a graphic design consultancy, we're too busy using kit to go out and research new stuff, this landed on our lap cause of the app store, we now have ten licenses. LOTS of people are discovering new apps for the first time through the app store. That's the point of the app store.

that's great. I hope the invest some of the cash in a Pro version that could give some competition to PS and more choice to the users.

37 degrees Celsius is harder than I thought.

Kudos to Apple but not so much to everyone else.

Many people with pirated Photoshop versions and a mild bad conscience might be persuaded now. Same goes for Aperture.
It works for Steam but the race to the bottom isn't plaguing them as much.

might have to buy this. For $30 its a steal and it says this price is for a limited time only.

Didn't know that gimp didn't work so well on Mac. I use it all the time on my windows machine with good results.

Anyway, is there a similar program that does vector artwork?

Too bad they left their users high and dry on the App Store version. If you had a previous version, it will not update past the 1.6.4 and will not show up that you already have it. I have 1.6.4 from a previous update and not the App Store version of 1.6.4. You are paying for future updates. So why should I pay $30 for a program I already have? Just to get updates? That sucks. Its a great program and all, but that would be a total of ~$90 from what I paid previously and then the App Store version.

I've been using PS since v.4 and have subsequently stalled at CS3 due to monetary reasons.

I am very comfortable with my workflow with CS3. Does Pixelmator do anything better than CS3 that would make me want to invest $30 into a program which is essentially a "duplicate" program.

Are there filters with Pixelmator that are not available with PS? Anything?

thanks,

David

You will be able to download updates from their website. Paying another $30 gets you the 2.0 upgrade. You will be paying them one way or another if you want 2.0. I never expected to get version 2.0 for free before the app store. I paid them another $30. I see it as an upgrade price.

I've never even heard of this (not being a Mac owner)

Is this better than Gimp then which is free?

http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/

I had Gimp on my machine for a few years. Never really been impressed with it, but it got me along. I hadn't heard of Pixelmator until the launch of the Mac App Store, but for $29 and based on the reviews, I gave it a shot. In the past week, I've used it more than I used Gimp in the past two years. I'm very, very impressed with Pixelmator. It reminds me a lot of what Photoshop was four or five years ago. . .and for $29, it's perfect for my needs. I've since uninstalled Gimp and have no intention of re-installing it. I'm also very impressed with the Pixelmator interface. Very slick and fast.

If you find yourself not using most of the features of PS and want a more responsive interface with faster rendering times then pixelmator is worth the buy. If not then stick with CS3. CS4-5 havn't really added anything worth the amount they charge for the upgrade pack imo so CS3 should be fine.

Well, this million might be their last one. No need to purchase it twice. Most people do not need it.

I bought it because I'm taking a graphic design class and it allows me to do the basic things I was doing at a much lower price.
