Managed to sign up for the beta for Pixelmator on iPad. It seems like a pretty solid photo editor.
I only just started to test it but looking like a great editor for on the go. iPad is made for photo editing, will be very nice to get some pro apps to help with this.

Anyone else on the beta?

If you missed out (there were only 250) it may be worth emailing, a friend was able to get an invite sent to them, saying they missed out due to time difference here in Aus.

Yes, on it here. Good range of editing options and performance for the most part is excellent. A few issues that I need to report back on though.

I am a little bit confused. Pixelmator has been available in the app store for a long time (rated 3.8/5). What is the difference with the "Photo" version?

How does it compare to Pro apps like Affinity Photo?

This is a more focused app for the basics of editing - mostly around tones and colours. It isn’t a true pixel editor for full manipulation. I actually think it needs a little redesign to make it a more palatable option for photo editing.

Hmm, if it is that limiting, why not incl. this functionality in the original app? That one is also allowing its user to do some basic photo editing. If the "Photo" app doesn't introduce a lot of valuable extras or a complete overhaul, it almost sounds like a quick money grab to me... ;)

It’s a complete rewrite; which as you say can then command a notable price purchase.

I think if you are not doing pixel level editing and don’t need layers then this new app is a more focused tool for editing photos. The Machine Learning adjustments are actually very good and there are some additional colour adjustments in this new app. I just wish they allowed you browse your photo library and edit on the fly instead of needing to import each photo individually to edit - that to me would work better with this new focused app.

Agree on the basics of Pixelmator’s use.... I personally much prefer ACDSee Pro which provides a much better level of photo editing AND allows you to select any photo from your camera role etc.

I thought there was Pixelmator for iOS for a while now. Are you talking about the new Pixelmator Pro?

If so, can you see if it comes with full brushes and painting engine, please? Thanks.

It’s Pixelmator Photo, built on the same engine as Pixelmator Pro but does not feature brushes or a painting engine.

Hasn't that been out for a while? Why beta? A new version?

Edit: Ah, now I see above. It is a new, streamlined version of Pixelmator. Ok, thanks.

Yes, Pixelmator Pro is in desktop and has been out for a while. Pixelmator Photo is new and exclusive to iPad. With the power of the new iPads though, I wish it was closer to Pixelmator Pro.

I’ve been using Pixelmator Photo some more today and it’s really grown on me. I think what it does, it does really well. Also sent feedback to the developers and there are some additional tools and adjustments in the pipeline. I think this could be one to watch.

I was just added to the beta too, and the app is beautiful. If I recall correctly the devs hinted at the possibility of Pixelmator Pro on the iPad on their community forums, I love the macOS variant, so I hope that’s the case.

They changed the icon for Pixelmator Photo, I think the old one is more deserving for the Pixelmator Pro on the iPad Pro. And they shortened the name to ‘Photo’ instead of ‘Pixelmator Photo’ on the home screen, I guess to not have it displayed as ‘PixelmatorPhoto’ (name is too long). But now I have apps named ‘Photo’ for Affinity Photo, ‘Photo’ for Pixelmator Photo, and Photos app. It’s not an actual issue whatsoever, just an aesthetic thought.

Anyway, I guess they’re not releasing the app this year? That’s what was stated. Although I’m excited, I love Pixelmator, they’re beautiful designed, and function great for what I use it for.

One big thing I really miss from Aperture is being able to see two photos side by side to compare focus. Does pixelmator photo let you do this?
