Although Subway is a launch partner (as I recall), I find ApplePay hit or miss there. The problem is the cashiers are not trained. I've learned not to say "I want to use ApplePay" as the cashier will look at me quizzically, then say "Oh!" and press some button that displays a QR Code for their own mobile payment app. Once they've pushed that QR Code button, they cannot get it to switch to another payment form without voiding and restarting the whole transaction... or worse, crashing the credit card reader (I had to pay with cash one time).

So, then I started just saying "credit card" ... but then they won't press the "credit" button on their register until I physically hand them a card.

I tried following up that blank stare with, "just press Credit." Which sometimes gets the result I want, or they resist thinking I'm trying to pull a fast one... or worse, as soon as I wave my watch over the reader, they say "Oh!" and quickly press the Subway App button and now we're going down that road of craziness again.

Sometimes my patience will win out, and the cashier will call a manager over for help, "I've never done Apple Pay before," and the manager will instruct, "oh, all you do is press Credit like normal. See?"

One such time the cashier reacted, "Wow, that is freaking amazing! I'm going to have to go back to iPhone!" and excitedly talked about it for a few minutes. Her sandwich-artist co-worker retorted, "Yeah, but Samsung is better!" The whole thing was quite amusing, but I just wanted to eat.

The irony: Subway is not only a launch (lunch?) partner, but their readers display the Apple Pay logo on the screen! Subway and Apple need to step up the game and keep cashiers trained on all forms of payment they accept. I have twice send feedback to Apple on these events.

Now it seems the smart thing to do is look to see if they have the reader on the counter facing the customer, or behind the register facing the clerk. Out on the counter is a good indicator that it will be frictionless. Behind the register? Just get the old-fashioned cash or credit card out. These days with credit card skimming, I'm reluctant to hand my credit card to anyone and will use cash instead. It's such a pain to change all my card numbers due to a skim or breach.

Frankly, I'm getting tired of training Subway employees... especially when turnover is high in the summer. My favorite Subway shop has all new staff... again. They had no clue, but I got it to work with the "just press credit" line, and the clerk said "Wow, I have never seen anything like that before! What is it?!" No kidding.

Other places I've used Apple Pay include Haggen's Grocery (who prominently advertises it on signs at the checkouts and front door), vending machines, Bartell's, Walgreen's, Office Depot, Petco, and unexpectedly, my dentist, who had a fairly new Chase terminal with the contactless logo on it. They were floored when it worked: "OMG, you just paid with your watch! This is the future!"

Oh, that's great to know. I'll make sure I educate the next Subway employee I try to buy a sandwich from!

The Lucky's grocery stores had their credit card readers hacked a couple years back. So now I only use ApplePay from my iPhone or Watch to pay there.

Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Nike, Toys 'R' Us have all worked, even if they didn't explicitly advertise Apple Pay.

Couldn't get it to work at Home Depot. Haven't tried Walgreens/McD's with the Watch as I rarely go there.

Whole Foods, Shoprite, Walgreens, the Apple Store, Panera Bread, and Subway. I've also used it at McDonald's and Burger King, but I've eliminated those from my diet.

It hasn't been working for me at Home Depot for some reason, looks like it's available on their machines but maybe it's disabled.

I know I've used the watch at vending machines at work (it's marvelous and I don't mind the 10 cent upcharge since they hadn't raised prices in years) and Firehouse Subs. Maybe I have done it with the watch at McDonald's and I think Trader Joe's once before they took it off the machine. I do recall the annoyance of having to sign a piece of paper at Trader Joe's and earlier at Office Depot. Someone in corporate pulling a CYA move thinking signing in ink is going to matter despite the fact that I passed all of Apple's security measures.

My hope is the independent stores that use Square registers will accept Apple Pay in the fall once the $50 reader comes out that also does chip and PIN. I'm also hopeful that Target will soon jump aboard and that the Starbucks gold card will be able to get used that way with the iOS9 update. You can scan the barcode with a watch, but it's obviously not as easy and the cashier at the drive-thru sometimes looks at you like you're crazy just holding your wrist up there.

On a side note: McDonald's, train your damn people about Apple Pay in the drive-thru. It's not difficult, and GDit I don't want to be misunderstood and the person thinks I want an apple pie.

UK here:

Boots
Pret
Caffe Nero
Transport for London (Rail journey)
Waitrose

Had some issue at Boots though in that my Watch didn't work but the iPhone did...

I haven't had an opportunity to use it yet. I have only used Apple Pay once (with my phone) at the Apple Store a few months ago. I don't think I've been any place else that can accept contactless payments.

sadly, no where. i'm IMPATIENTLY waiting for discover to get off their arses and join apple pay!

if discover was with the program already, I would have used it at firehouse subs, sprouts, macy*s

I do use my watch at starbucks... but not as apple pay... I use a card so that I earn starts!

Why does a place having apple pay make me want to use Apple Pay? Yesterday I was at the bagel shop and got $4 dollars of stuff. I really wanted to use Apple pay but I resisted because I didn't want to start a big thing there. Plus I had $4 dollars cash LOL

I didn't realise on how America are such early adopters of contactless payments and chip&pin considering Visa and Mastercard are both American companies.

Haggen's - Our local grocery store chain in Bellingham, Washington has been accepting Apple Pay for at least a couple of months. This is great because it's the store I shop in most frequently. My wife and I use the Bring app to share a grocery list. Since it has a watch app I can get the grocery shopping done and check out with out ever pulling out my iPhone or my wallet!

I've used it at :-

Pret
M&S
Coop
McDonalds
Costa Coffee
Boots

Only fail I've had was today at M&S Food, for some reason it didn't like my Watch, I was too embarrassed to try the phone at that point (queue was big) so just got my card out. I used my phone there the other day so not sure if it was a bad reader. They are a launch partner in the UK so I'm assuming their readers are Watch compatible.

Fast food van at Silverstone to buy a hot chocolate (it was freezing up there on Sunday)
M&S
Waitrose
WHSmith concession at Marylebone
Boots

And a few more I've forgotten about in the couple of weeks since we got it here in the UK.

The usual places already listed, Mickey D's, Subway, Walgreens, Home Depot, Panera's, and Meijers.

The Thread Starter said he was waiting to use it at the pumps at a gas station. I switched where I buy gas because Meijers Gas station pumps will accept the :apple: Watch. Just start to use your CC and when it tells you to scan your card hold your watch up to the words "Fasttap" on the front of the pump near where you would scan your card and it will work just fine.

I'm paying a little more for gas, but I think my card was compromised at the station that I was using, and someone in Pakistan tried to use it to purchase something worth $1800.00. My bank caught it and now I'm going through my online accounts trying to get them all switched over to the new card.

It's incidents like this that really make you appreciate the security of :apple: Pay. Having the convenience of doing it with the :apple: Watch is just icing on the cupcake.

I used mine at a food truck today. It was awesome. The burger and fries were good too.

I'm undoing all the gains I'm making by being more active thanks to tracking through the vending machines at work that accept contactless payments :(((

I had $1200 worth of tickets put on my amex card a while back... and shortly before that happened I gave my card to a car wash attendant who disappeared withit into an office for a few minutes. Ever since then I won't even lay my card down on a table for a waiter to take. I don't let my cards leave my hands now. No way to prove it was that situation that resulted in my card data beeing stolen, of course. It could have as easily been stolen online.

Amex was really cool and sent me new cards immediately- but the new cards are just as susceptable to being used by someone else who has a camera handy or a criminal card reader.

Nope! I'd use Pay's secure token payment system for EVERYTHING if I could!!!

Oh, thanks... I just about spit Coke out all over my computer. That's funny.

"That'll be $4.32, please."
"Apple Pay?"
"Yes." (pushes a button) "Got it. $5.68, please."
(holds wrist out window) ... "I'd like to use Apple Pay."
"I just added it to your order, sir. You'll pick it up at the next window. $5.68, please."
"No, don't you take Apple Pay?"
"I won't take your pie. Surely, you must be joking."
"I'm not, and don't call me Shirley."

A bit of an overreaction, as you're not responsible for fraudulent charges anyway. It's not a case of Amex being cool about it; they have to cover you regardless.
