Thanks for all the tips and info given in this thread. I do understand they are not FOR theft prevention and are designed to be lost item locators.

I actually found a place tonight to store our camper that said they haven’t had a single camper stolen and they’ve kept them there for years. (I’ve lived in this area for 10 years and didn’t even know it existed let along campers being stored there too) Better than the rest of the places that state they get stolen on the regular. I’ve still got a proven industries hitch coupler lock and a big yellow wheel boot lock just in case someone finds it back there and wants it. After looking at the rest of the campers back there, mine is the newest but will be the hardest to take away! Aaaaaand we have full coverage insurance in case lol.

... it's more the fault of the owner of the car being stolen than the fault of the thief. Car theft is not a common occurrence. Breaking into a car IS common. And I'm saying it's more the fault of the owner for the car theft because these people are obviously placing their car in harms way or making it too easy for thieves to steal it...
As a security professional, I'd be very interested to learn about your sources of this information.

I just love nonsensical thinking in this thread of people buying the Airtags for theft prevention, especially when discussing cars. Apple does not support this and that's not the point of the Airtags at all. Furthermore if one is so concerned about their car being stolen that they are buying the Airtags for it then it's more the fault of the owner of the car being stolen than the fault of the thief. I can't wait in the coming weeks for MR's front page news of people stupidly TRYING to sue Apple for the Airtag chirping and tipping off thieves so they can disable the Airtag and proceed with driving off to Lala land with the "victims" car. 😂
I'm on board with this line of thinking, regardless of the statistics of what type of crime is more frequent. I mean, the thought process to think that AirTags are good for tracking a stolen car have to be somewhere along this line:
"I'm worried about my property, which is worth many thousands of dollars, being stolen. But I'm only willing to spend $30 to prevent it from being stolen or potentially getting my property back if it is stolen."
If that is really your thought process, you need to reassess your priorities.

Where do you get this idea?

Car theft is lower in the US, at least, since we've added engine immobilizers to cars, but it is possible and very much still occurs. There is also a steep climb in car jacking now as well which is also car theft with the only difference being that someone happens to be in the vehicle at the time of the theft. Car jacking is on a rise due to the engine immobilizers I mentioned earlier.

You're missing the entire point so please move on.

I always have my phone and iPad when I go out. The iPad I mounted next to me in the car. I hide it when I go into stores for awhile or if I'll be away from the car in a bad area. I've half kiddingly said "I can track the car if it's stolen". My girlfriend and I end up leaving a club separate one night. I was able to track the car as she drove to pick me up. Can AirTags be used the same way short term? I'm not worried about one of my cars being stolen but as I did with my iPad, can an AirTag be left in a car for a night and used to track it if someone steals it? I know they aren't designed for that but neither is an iPad and it worked for tracking purposes.

One of the main reasons I want to use airtags in my car is to remember where I parked. I’m not getting into this argument about whether its right for me to use the airtags to track if my car was stolen. People in this forum, man…

just a heads up, if you bluetooth connect to your car, or if you use wired or wireless carplay go to settings -> maps -> show parked location. if you do this apple maps, even if not open, will mark the parked location of your car everytime you get out and it will be visible on the map until you move it again.

Let us know how it works for this. Early reports are that it’s not going to work well in this use case.
You will be able to track the car when you can see the car right in front of you. The sheer amount of steel inside a car park makes sure that the Bluetooth and UWB signal will only be detected when you’re really near the car.

I’m interested in keeping tabs off a camper that I will have stored away from me. It will be by other houses so I assume there will be close by iOS devices. I’m mainly worried about tracking it if it winds up stolen. My biggest worry at this point is that I’ve read it beeps once it moves once I’m away from it for over 3 days. I will not be by it every 3 days so this may be an issue as a potential thief moves it and then follows the beeping.
Am I understanding it correctly that this is how the airtag will react in this instance?

I’m also exploring the possibility of a full stand along gps tracker. I’ve found one on amazon that is 140 or so with a 2 year subscription to att cell service included. The downside to this is battery life, while its one of the better ones I’ve found in this price point, its probably still not over a month if I have frequent gps updates as a setting.

Thanks for any insight!
Brad
Your camper is worth what? $20k? $50k?
Buy a proper GPS tracker designed for the job even if you have to update the battery a few times a year.
