Apple has explicitly stated that all of its displays will ultimately move to LED backlighting technology "when economically feasible". To the best of my knowledge, nobody is certain when that will be.

I hope it isn't too far off into the future. My backlight is starting to bleed more and more from the bottom and it would be great if I can get a LED replacement when the time comes.

I'm also looking forward to LED-backlit 17-inch models, even though my current 17" is still quite new. When the LED models come out, I'll sell this one---but only after I'm convinced that the 17" LED models don't suffer from the same problems we've encountered with the current crop of 15-inchers.
After what I've had to go through with MBP defects continuously over the last year (and now finally have one that's worth keeping), it's amazing I'm still an Apple customer at all.
Might be another year. I've read that making backlit LED screens is harder to do on bigger and higher resolution screens like the 17" HD screen Apple is finally offering. I expect a LED backlit screen on the MacBook will come next.
