It amazes me how most people see "freemium" and automatically think it ask for your money constantly or it won't be fun. Also, don't give this game that much credit- other freemiums have been done this way, it ain't new.

That being said, this game simply wasn't worth it, I would rather revisit the original, it just begs the question "why wasn't this DLC?".

i cant afford freemium

Yeah, why listen to reviewers (and people who have actually played the game) who say it's a fun game you can complete without spending money on IAP?

So much simpler (albeit sadder) to insist IAP == BAD.

Complain about the IAP's aspect of the game all you want (I hate the freemium business model too), but I have played through most of the game without spending any real money or any coins. I see it as a challenge. Beat the game without using any of the purchases or upgrades.

Really? Fun? What's fun in playing the same level 4 times?
It's fun when you can't spend any sun for 90-120 sec just to use powerups? (which cost money)
Don't get me started on the prices of some of my favourites plants from PvZ 1...

Yeah, i guess is really is a challenge to play the same level 4 times, sometimes with some impossible objective...

its so difficult ... i dont get how im supposed to collect over 2.500 suns in such a short time for example

does not not so it does?

when you have the leaf came out from the zombie with green shadow (bonus), use it for sunflower instead, it will give you many suns at once. 2500 suns will be filled pretty quick. I did it many times :)

And, i never use IAP at all, and i can finish most of the level at ease.

This is fairly sad - the masses are putting up with In App Purchases and the freemium model.

I would rather EA put out a $50 game on iOS that includes everything than feel like I'm in a kid approved casino :(

I'll be sticking with my Nintendo 3DS XL for all of my portable gaming, where gaming is still fun and doesn't nag you every 5 minutes to spend more money on a game you already installed.

It's incredibly playable without making a single purchase. I've played through most of it with no problems and never had to buy anything to advance.

And if you can, use it on a double headed sunflower; even more sun. If you have one in your inventory but haven't planted it . . . plant it first, it's worth it.

I wasn't going to download it out of protest, but curiosity got the best of me. I've finished world 1 with 3 stars everywhere except for two where you have to wait 120 seconds before spending any sun. Impossible with the plants I have, I guess I could use the inapp coins to pay for some powerups? But I haven't tried it yet. World 2 is about 1/2 way done with all stars earned.

So far the game is OK, not nearly as fun as the first, the pace is MUCH slower and a lot more repetitive. I will not spend any money on it, but if it was $10 at launch I would have payed for it and it would have been OK.

You can use coin purchases to pinch the zombie heads off or fling them off the screen. You should have built up quite a huge coin bank now anyway if you've never used them. You're also not actually using any real money to do that since you build up coins just playing through so it's still free. If you choose not to that's fine too but either way, you're not actually spending any real money.

I have to admit I'm surprised. I was really expecting it to allow you to play the first world and then start getting in your face or requiring everything to be purchased. So far, it's been quite tame. But few fremium games are this way. It is a lot better than I was expecting; especially from EA!

So because it's too hard for you it's a bad game?

The in app purchases give you some stuff early on that you can eventually get just by playing through (ie, extra plant slots, keys to unlock new levels that have new plants, etc.). With the exception of a few "classic" plants that never unlock, most of the game becomes available by just playing through.

Plus, I don't know about you, but I found some of the new plants and new zombies to be pretty fun and some really challenging like the zombie with the chickens.

For now that is there and fine, but you still have those popups 30 percent off this plant today and other things that make you think about money when playing the game and that is not an experience I want to deal with anymore.

Also in a month or 2 EA has a bad history of taking stuff like this game and making it unplayable without spending money. See Real Racing 3 as an example.

Let me buy a $10 - $50 version of the game that has everything and that won't change to some crappy game in the future then I'll jump in.

What sucks about that is that those star things aren't even achievable until you try to advance to the next world.

That would be like in one of the newer Mario games not being able to even look for the hidden star coins unless you finished that world. And they forced you to go back and find those hidden star coins before advancing any further.

Some gamers - many in fact just want to play the levels and not 100 percent the game.

I'm in the camp that likes to complete the main story/levels and then go back to find the hidden items and collect those star coins etc.

It is poor design aimed only to make EA money, and not to provide enjoyment to its players.

this game deserved this success, it's really awesome, a great sequel, and everyone who's complaining that why do people play so childish games should give it a try.

If you mean DLC as in "downloadable and playable for free" - well, that's what it is. And by the way: I'm not through yet, but already like it at least as much as the original - totally worth it imho!

The star coins require a bit more tactic play and some experience, so it makes sense to have the player go through a couple of sub-levels and get familiar with his options before attempting those special star sub-levels.

Of course they might have allowed for experienced players to do it immediately, but it's no big deal really.

----------

If I'm struggling, I eventually get past the level. It takes time... but at least I don't feel like I cheated my way through it.
This! Today's players often don't have the endurance to keep trying on difficult parts, so the games are already ridiculously easy compared to most games of the 80's or 90's.

Seems noone wants to practice anymore - quick success is the only thing that counts these days. :(

Tombstones don't have to be cleared either for level to be completed.
Not correct. When you have to protect the sunflowers in the middle (up to the near right) of the field, there must be no tombstone directly in front of it, otherwise it'll be eaten by some head-protected Zombie before you can kill it.

Also - if nearly the full lane (or the most part on all lanes) is blocked by tombstones, you would be overrun if you wouldn't clear at least some of them.

I had that setting already, though i can't remember if it was one of the "locked" parts (to be opened with the pyramid keys) where you could get the tombstone eater plant (which isn't necessary, but relieves the stress compared to having to clear a tombstone with standard plants).

It IS fun ... it IS good ... and it IS *constantly* in your face about possibly spending money. Not forcing you, but applying psychological pressure.

Congrats on your superior gaming skills ... most people see replaying the same level a half dozen times with minor tweaks (i.e. copy & paste design) as a dreary bore and will pay to get past it ... which is the 'design by psychological manipulation specialist' goal from EA.

You barely get out of the tutorial before it is in your face. That said, unlike many games in Japan/Korea in particular, you are not FORCED to spend money. They just make sure you have to do WoW/Final Fantasy type level-grinding to escape the first area ... so if you want to feel like you are 'making progress' you will pay.

I'm on the second world. For kids, this game is an absolute nightmare, it's an easy way to get them pouring money. For adults, it's great, especially if you've played through the original entirely.

I'm enjoying it, it's going to take me months to finish it, but honestly, it's a long lasting game unlike the original which takes you a day to go through.

Does any one know how can I unlock the last level that looks like futuristic/space thing?

In Egypt and Pirates you have to complete certain amount of stars to go forward, but in the Wild West it doesn't say anything

shocked! i didnt knew that an app with such a low-quality graphics would be so successful. maybe it's so successful because it's going for free.

Upcoming content. Not yet available.

Nonsense! Fun comes from good gameplay and has little to do with graphic quality. Quite some gaming marbles in history actually offer (significantly) worse graphics.

Double sunflower w/ plant food. Use the freeze plant and walnuts to also buy time. I was able to do it by waiting for the last zombie and slowly his progress WAY down.

I deleted it because its free to play. I try to avoid free to play apps as much as possible. It's simply an awful experience and developers should not feel motivated to do it.

Also it lacks the simplicity and charme of the
First game

This is by far one of the best free to play apps I've found. I'm at about 2/3 complete and haven't spent a dime.

I'm getting close to beating the game and I've yet spent a dime on any in-app purchases. It's looking beatable to me.

Well done! I'm not that close but can't see any reason to pay for anything.

I didn't realize that! Wow, that would make it much easier. :D

Double sunflower w/ plant food. Also, jump into world two and don't open any gates until you can open the 5 key one towards the end of the level and get the extra plant slot. That has helped me a lot.

And if you can, use it on a double headed sunflower; even more sun. If you have one in your inventory but haven't planted it . . . plant it first, it's worth it.

Hit it with plant food, and it coughs up tons of sun.

I completed this game in like 2 days , its great but for a game that took so long it should have had more content.

Some of the challenges with stars are impossible to complete without buying buying to use Zap on them. I tried it few times its just impossible.

One of them is having the flowers NOT tramped in the middle of the map, while there is the zombie with the chickens appearing as the 3rd or 4th zombie. By that time you still did not have enough time/money to build enough defenses
