Nothing but audio for me here.

Tried VLC, tried XviD, no dice. Even tried converting the thing to .mov file with DivX Doctor, to no avail.

I really want to see this, does anyone have any other suggestions?

works fine for me on vlc under windows (no additional codecs or anything installed.) that looks really cool...i wonder why apple didn't include that in the firmware if it's perfectly capable of playing videos

This sounds great....unless it voids the warranty. I'd rather not lose the warranty on a $500 iPod. But I'm glad someone proved it's possible. Come on Apple....release an update :)

This isn't exactly the kind of thing Apple can just throw into an update. To do this you have to install an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT OS onto you iPod. I mean, Apple COULD make the iPod video, but it wouldn't be at all similar to the method shown in this thread.

I don't get it if you put linux on the ipod does the interface change or does itstill look the same. no body answered if you could see on the tv if you used the cable thing connected to tv.

Guys, before you all go off and download the Linux utility for you new iPods, actually try paying some attention to the video.

Yes it looks like the video is running quite smoothly in it. But the audio doesn't seem to sync properly. So obviously this isn't anywhere near perfect.

I am suprised that with iTunes 5, we didn't see a firmware update to allow music videos to be watched on an iPod.

There is a certain amount of logic in saying that Apple would rather not have this feature accesible because from their perspective it would not make the iPods any more desirable (everybody is already nuts about them for music) and would take away from the eventual Apple portable video player. I don't call it iPod video or anything of the sort, because at this point I have a feeling like Apple will never launch the device under the iPod name.

How about iScreen as a name? As in the modern replacement for the film projection screen.

The video player is not fully functional in that build.

To install from a mac you need

http://kainjow.com/blog/blosxom.cgi/2005/08/17

and a recent kernel and podzilla from:

http://ipodlinux.org/builds/

The instructions for using the installer to install newer builds are in the first post here (if you can't figure them out you may want to wait until someone posts more detail, you need to delete the two old files 2005-08-23 and replace them with the newer ones. The date part of the filename does not matter):

http://ipodlinux.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3172

Instructions for converting the videos are here:

http://ipodlinux.org/Video_Player#Photo

The resulting files are huge (270 megs for 4 mins) and when I did it on my mac the colors weren't right, but using my windows comp they turned out ok.

It does not work perfectly, but it is still pretty impressive.

There is a lot of info in the ipodlinux forums that you may want to read before attempting this.

I have the Nano also and would like to do this.

But I dont quite understand why I cant. I mean they are all iPods so why would the software used to intall on my nano be any different than for other ipods?
