Hey for those of you using Yosemite, what are you using to playback AVI and WMV files? Do any of these solutions generate preview thumbnails in Finder for these files? What do you recommend?

    Thanks for any insights. :)

I find VLC can play most AVIs, I don't as a rule download WMVs...

    Seconded for VLC.
It's just that much more feature rich than Quicktime.

VLC for sure, it's by far the best video player out there.

I use MPlayerX, it runs so much more fluidly than VLC, and it feels much more native. The full screen animation in MPlayerX is faster than VLC even though they both use OS X Lion style fullscreen.

I do like the fact that VLC can even play videos that are still downloading though. That's a killer feature.

Thanks... I'll check that out. Looks great.

I've used both of these on Mavericks and I like them both... so are they both working fairly well on Yosemite?

Yeah, I'm running Plex on my Mini for HTPC duty and it's working fine on Yosemite but it's not what I need here... I need a simple player.

MPlayerX myself - it plays pretty much everything Quicktime doesn't.

I did notice a bug with it in Yosemite though. The player will crash if you try to click a point in the video to fast forward to. However, if you drag the status to the future, it will fast forward without problems.

I have no problem doing that in Yosemite DP5, using MPlayer X Version 1.0.22 (1777)

Actually, I misspoke... I use MPlayer OSX... I have no experience with MplayerX.

Does MplayerX allow multiple instances? e.g. allow you to play a few videos at the same time?

No, only one video file at a time.
