That isn’t very brave. We wouldn’t have most of the world’s top technological breakthroughs if everyone thought this way. Just a bunch of vanilla “yes-person” projects. And thankfully, resumes reflect this.
Ok - I'll caveat that with potential pay-off.
When I was working on ultrasound mediated drug delivery that was not a clear-cut case of success, but the potential pay-off (improved QoL) was there. We ended up discovering some aspects of radiation pressure and methods suitable for future development.

The funding for that project was less than for this (yet another) games console.

The economics of the Playdate have no similarities to medical devices. I don't believe Panic has detailed their development costs, but developing a new medical device costs 30-100 million.

1. It does - because I know the resources and skills needed to develop such products - which could be used for many more useful things - heck even making a better Android phone.
What gives you the right to decide what is more "useful"? What gives you the right to decide what these people FREELY choose to do with their time? None of them were forced to make this they CHOSE to do it. You have zero right to declare they should have done something else. And given that you are criticizing this particular device and not, say, all game systems or computing devices in general you have zero grounds to stand on. This is no more or less useful than any other gaming device or toy or any other device that isn't specifically focused at meeting some actual need. And again, you being an "engineer" has exactly zero to do with that.

2. It will. And it's a waste of money compared to, for example, a Nin. Switch.
Unless you have the power to see the future you can not declare what will or will not happen, so stop trying.
And there is no objective standard by which you can declare it a waste of money compared to a Nintendo Switch or any other gaming device. Whether or not its a "waste of money" is entirely dependent on the individual and what they value. People have different tastes, stop thinking YOUR particular view is the only one that matters. You are not the center of the universe.

3. And that is the exact problem that I am highlighting - we are surrounded by "toys" in an attention economy.
No, you aren't highlighting anything except your own judgmental attitude. People have fun in life, one way is by using toys. You may personally see that as a problem, but if so you better never ever EVER do anything for fun or purchase anything for the purpose of fun. Meanwhile, what does an "attention economy" (whatever THAT is) have to do with it?

4. We are discussing this one in particular.
No, we aren't. You are making absolute declarative statements about "toys" and "waste of resources", ergo its completely valid to include the "toys" you waste YOUR resources on. If you are going to base your argument on toys being a waste of resources for others, then you absolutely better not spend any resources on toys yourself.

Come on, why state the bleeding obvious? This isn't even comparable to the Steam Deck. Completely different target audience & market.
Right? The number of self-absorbed people who feel the need to publicly declare how this is terrible because it doesn't cater to their particular wants/needs is astounding. How hard is it to accept that not everything in the world is about themselves?

All the red necks playing hillbilly black mouth bass fishing derby 4 on PlayStation 2 will finally Have a new home to look forward to!
Lol actually it sounds like fun. I played a VR fishing game on Samsung VR that I miss. I like the basic idea and mechanics of fishing but I don’t miss real fishing much at my age. I loved it as a kid, though.

Like 80% of the other commenters on this thread.... if you'd only just read the bloody product page where you can see all TWENTY FOUR, 2 per week, for 12 weeks and every other detail everyone it bitching about but didn't read.

Let's all criticize a product we didn't take 2 seconds to read about.
None of that was on the product page the day I posted my comment. I had to look at YouTube clips to see the list of games and screenshots.

The Playdate Update video is great for hype. Lucas Pope’s project looks great and the Developer Preview segment has a lot of interesting looking titles as wel.

(it was)

I'll accept that maybe you saw the limited page they had up when their servers were getting hammered, but this info's been out for ages. They're very open developers.
