This is why I think all the dismissal of this over specs was ridiculous. Once you actually use it it will blow you away and make the MBA obsolete.

I wouldn't go that far... yet. Did you see one in person and use it yet? I did, and i can tell you its the size of the MBA 11" screen and body wise basically. For guys like me who larger hands i appreciate the extra wrist rest found on the 13.3" screen. Its hard to go down 1.5" in screen size but i guess it could grow on me.

The specs worry me the least, because i don't do anything that needs raw power. But its VERY compact as in wrist rest etc.

IMO at the moment a perfect machine would be a 13.3" MBA in its current form with a retina screen & that new nifty track pad :D

Cheers for the review and photos. Definitely want one and I prefer the gold model as I've a gold iPhone and iPad. :D

I'd like to know what the "Retina" resolution, is it something like 1280x800? Or lower?

It's 1280x800 by default although that's not the 4x retina resolution. "Native" is 1152x720 but it's not set at that by default. Only one review pointed it out so it's not an issue for clarity that it isn't native by default.

I'm shocked to see that the space gray rMB is as dark as the old space gray Air 1. I thought for sure it would be the light space gray as seen on the iPhone 6 and Air 2.

Interesting.

Is the Air 1 really darker than the Air 2? Do you have a photo? I'm curious how Apple makes these decisions on how dark/light to make the space gray, especially as they now have multiple devices in space gray each one is a different shade of dark.

I never realized before how light the space gray is on the iPhone 6. Is the photo I provided of the Air 1? I just assumed it was the Air 2.

Just played with one for about 10 minutes a few hours ago. Not a fan of the small display, would much prefer a 14 or even a 13 inch. Love the keyboard as I am a tapping typist and only use my index fingers. Its incredibly thin and light and ran everything just fine. I opened up iMovie and played around with the sample files a bit too. Didn't notice any lag. Mine is arriving Wed, still not sure I'll keep it but we'll see.

No pic but I believe so, your photo is an Air 1. Yeah the space gray now is VERY close to the raw aluminum, so I'm surprised to see the, go "backwards" amd go with a darker space gray. I like it though on the rMB.

Interesting thoughts. I always thought the 11" Air screen was too small. My ideal screen size is 13 inches, but I'm sure I'll be fine with the benefits the rMB display offers over the 11-inch Air.

I can't say about the Air, but my iPad Mini 2 is the same color as the MB.

I think.

Would be nice to hear your experience with iMovie after wednesday when you have your own stuff to play around with.
I'm mostly interested in how the cpu (1,1ghz) handles working in iMovie. Lagging when using big files, music, text? Exporting is not that important. Can do that at night though it would be interesting to see if it throttles and how soon.

Went to my store for the Watch. Tried it on, it's quite boss, about what I expected, but I did not expect to like the Macbook so much. Firstly, the thinness makes a much bigger impression in person. The profile combined with the new look of the keys and the color is class all the way. This is a classy machine. The trackpad - the trackpad easily surpasses that of the Airs I've used. But it's not the Force Touch for me so much as the updated design.

I love the keyboard. Yes, I'm used to spring, but right now I have my trackpad for my Mac set for taps and not clicks, and it took a little bit to get used to that, but now I wouldn't have it any other way. I started feeling like I could easily settle in that same space with the keyboard since it's almost the same thing. Now, I won't say one is necessarily better than the other. But I certainly didn't have a problem typing, it was incredibly enjoyable and smooth.

Lack of ports...the one thing I would care about is whether I could charge iPhone/iPad, but we may well see USB-C in iPhone 7 or, if :apple: has a massive set of balls, iPhone 6S. While I understand the Pro need, as I do some of that work myself, it's also very clear to me especially after seeing it who the audience is. The idea of your laptop being just as wireless as your iOS devices is VERY appealing to me and this will only be good for cloud computing overall.

I still think the price point is a bit steep, but make this a $999-$1,200 machine and it will fly out the door.

As you said, price point wise it is a bit steep but looking at the trend right now there is more demand than supply. So perhaps Apple is playing the game right to maximize their profit.

At the end of the day we are getting what we pay for, a device with great quality that satisfy our lust :D.

Think I am out. Tried a 1.1 in the local Apple store today and it`s everything we have heard; The display is fabulous the colours really pop. The keyboard is a non issue for me, the the keys have very shallow travel, however they are extremely responsive with very nice positive feedback. Trackpad works as promised, a clever development on the original. All in all it`s a great package, definitely best looking Notebook I have ever seen.

The bad, the 1.1 display model was still in 10.10.2, which is not a big deal, just an observation. Switching the display to 1440x900 (scaled) which for me is a necessity, opening multiple apps in fullscreen lag in the UI was very apparent more so than I have seen on any other Retina I also noticed that the demo units software image was sparse to say the least, only Apple applications, certainly nothing heavyweight, I had to take pause to think what to open to load the GPU. Equally was able to induce the lag repeatedly and am now not confident the MacBook will deal with my workflow without overly lagging.

The store was packed being the weekend, so I will likely go back midweek and have another look on a freshly booted machine to see if there is any difference. I have always had concern on the GPU`s capabilities due how OS X scales/renders Retina Apple advised in store availability will be 4 weeks FWIW.

I am definitely going to get a MacBook, however maybe not the current version as Skylake is not so far away and will likely resolve much of the GPU issues.

Thanks for your feedback.

This is also an issue with the broadwell MBP according to the forums which may point towards a broadwell driver issue in the current version of Yosemite.

Had it not been for the exact same report on the much more powerful 13 I would have been really concerned by this.

Fingers crossed 10.10.3 cures the issue. One would assume the machine is designed to handle the different scaling options with no hassle since they are standard fare in the menus.

I have a 13" retina (2015) and there is still UI lag on 10.3.3.

It happens when you 3 finger swipe up to view open apps.

:-(

I read some users thinking it was the new GPU not being man enough but it's more powerful than the 2014 version so it must be a Broadwell software issue. I think until the 13 MBP issue is sorted the 12 will have the same problem and hopefully we find its man enough.

Hopefully, have seen the comment on the 13" MBPr and have a 2.8/512 2014 13" MBPr which has no lag. All the same I will sit it out until either Apple catches up with the drivers or Skylake is here.

The display unit I used yesterday (rMB) was on 10.3.3. It has the same UI lag. I really think it is driver issues. 10.3.3 made it better on my 13" rMBP, but it is still there.

If I had the same patience i'd do the same!

The bigger concern is Broadwell has an issue which is why it was delayed so badly and there's no fix, only band aids.

All this just highlights how poor a representation of a machines pros and cons the 'official reviews' provide. Don't get me wrong I subscribe to most of them on YouTube and eagerly await the posting of their latest videos but you've only got to watch the review videos from people like The Verge to realise they really don't go into any detail at all and as a result miss stuff like this completely.

----------

The one I tried this afternoon was on 10.10.2, Shenzhen Southern China. Was very easy to trigger the lag so am holding off, especially as my 13" Retina has no issue.

Q-6

Which 13 MBP have you got?

I tried it out friday and saturday and basically fell in love with this machine. Mine is set to arrive in store 4/16.
