Playing an .avi on Iphone 3G

I recently got Yxflash to play .avi files on my iphone but was disappointed to see that playback was very choppy. I'm assuming this is a hardware limitation for the Iphone 3G. Any other programs that do the same thing but perhaps reduce the choppiness? Thanks

If the VLC app will run on the iPhone 3G when it comes out for the iPhone/iPod Touch, then it might have enough power to play the movie.

Best to convert to mp4 if you can, I use Mediacoder (iPod edition, free) but there are loads of others.
