Hi all! Next-gen 2020 consoles will have very powerful components: about 3.6GHz 16 thread cpu and about 12 TFLOPS gpu. If crossplatform games running on consoles and PCs/Macs will raise to consoles' standards, should we be worried? Can Macs/PCs with mid-range capabilities (12 threads, slightly lower clock, midrange graphics card) run the games?

My guess is, since consoles are for up to 4K, if you're gaming on lower resolutions, you can get away with a midrange computer. Is that true, even with 12-thread, slightly lower-clocked cpu?

My impression is that PCs outperform consoles, typical consoles have lower graphic abilities as compared to a current PC with recent graphic upgrades, and consequently, you don’t see much cross console-PC game play, because the console is the bottleneck.

Understood. As computers advance, they'll be fine. They'll surpass consoles.

When these consoles come out there won’t be many PCs with equivalent specs. For the Xbox, at least, you’re looking at an RTX 2080 Ti card, and the SSD in the Playstation is way faster than anything commonly available in PCs.

Still, you can bet that game devs will lean towards eye candy and target 30 fps for most console games.

How much will they cost, $600+?

I was all but set in getting the PS5, but truth be told, I'm very happy playing games on my PC. As for game playing on a Mac, its just virtually non-existent and only getting worse, i.e., with Catalina you cannot play many games because they're 32bit.

I've not followed a lot of the details, but what I've stumbled upon the next gen consoles exceed the capabilities of most PCs. That's not to say they'll not eventually leap frog consoles but think about it. For 500 dollars, I can get a console that has 1TB ssd of storage, high performing GPU and cpu. You'll be lucky to get a mid-range Nvidia card for that price.

I agree with Maflynn. Next-gen consoles will be amazing! But, Maflynn, I want to add that if you want to play MMORPGs or RPGs with a lot of inputs, you'll usually need a keyboard. Usually, controllers aren't enough.

But I want to talk about 32-bit games. If I run Windows 10 on Boot Camp, and get games for Windows, will the computer be able to support those 32-bit games?

controllers aren't enough.
That's one reason why I'm on a PC now, controllers are nice, but I find I'm able to do more with mouse/keyboards

for Windows, will the computer be able to support those 32-bit games?
Yes, I'm rocking with x64 version of windows 10 on my PC, and I can play any and every game.

Yup yup. And not only do PCs allow for more inputs, it's suitable for more types of tasks than consoles, making consoles a tough sell imo unless cheaper and you could have both.

It's anybody's guess at the moment! PS3 launched at $600 14 years ago, so it's not out of the question. Microsoft and Sony are probably waiting for the other to announce a price first, so they can immediately undercut it by $50. I doubt if either one will be 'impulse purchase' cheap.

I'm clearly showing my age or i'm so out of touch with games these days as I still consider the PS3 to be a pretty modern console. 14 years!!! Incredible.

Welcome to the future! At least Sony has a logical sort of naming convention so you don't end up buying the wrong one.
Microsoft is all over the place - Xbox > Xbox 360 > Xbox One > Xbox One X > Xbox Series X

They should name the consoles after the year they were released, like sports games or operating systems.

The advantages of a PC are sizable for gaming. I prefer file and mod flexibility, keyboard mouse, and upgrade abilities. Yes, it costs money, but in this particular PC build, I’m on my 3rd graphic card, and second motherboard although I admit to buggering that during a graphic card replacement. 😬

PC's are a lot more customizable and could last long if you replace some parts. And you can do more with PCs.

I'm the same, I found I'm getting more enjoyment with keyboard/mouse over the controller. I will also say my desk setup provides a better enjoyment then where my PS4 is set up. I remember playing the outerworlds on my PS4 and I can barely make out the text. I'd basically have to stand near the TV, but with my desk setup, its a lot better
