That’s on the developers, not Apple.

How? I mean the developer is at fault as well but its also Apples fault for not implementing a good ecosystem for it . Metal is a great step forward and games that run on that runs great but they could support Vulkan to name a few things.

@RumorConsumer yup, all settings on high (i7 2018 MBP) == 30fps, medium == 60.
Very playable!
You have no extreme long loading times especially on the first round, no crashes and no consistent drops to 10-20 fps at all? If so, lucky you :)

Edit: BTW at what resolution? Maybe this weeks patch helped for some if you really get these results? I had to return my i9 Macbook so I can't test myself. The last time I tried to play it was last Sunday and all the problems I described in this thread were still there. It would be great if they got performance up to at least my Bootcamp levels of performance on MacOS.

I would disagree with this, Apple provides the ecosystem and tools for developers to build their games to run well on Macs (with perhaps the exception of the weak GPU support).

Ultimately the developers could build truly optimized games for the Mac ecosystem, but part of why they don’t is because there isn’t a high demand for it. Macs are publicly known for not having a lot of gaming support, and therefore most people automatically shift to Windows for gaming. No or little demand = no reason to build and optimize on the Mac hardware. It’s as simple as that really.

Fortnight being a very busy MMO needs to be played on a proper gaming device with a mouse. Otherwise you’re just asking for some 10 year old kid with a gaming rig to shoot you in the face all day. Waste of a 3000 dollars.

But don’t ask me. I’m busy making a living with my laptop so all these complaints are pissing in the wind stories.
how do you use your mbp to make a living?

Fortnite’s last major update (late 2017) caused it to run poor on Macs. Just check their forums. It’s terribly optimized on Macs and hasn’t truely been fixed since.

The problem isn’t the specs. The problem is the optimization for MacOS.

Yes but what incentive is there for devs to work on games on Mac when the install base isn’t there ? That is apples fault not the devs. It’s a case of what came first the chicken or the egg. Also as I stated they don’t support Vulkan and they are depreciating open GL in favor of Metal ( in of it self that’s a good thing.) . Games which should run good on paper run badly on Mac. Either way Apple started to care a little to late.

How is this Apple's fault? Yes I would love if they supported Vulkan, but it is not like Fortnite supports linux and had a Vulkan client out there. It is only optimized for DirectX right now and they already support Metal so they might as well optimize it or just kill the game on it.

Windows supports Vulkan and I was talking in general just not about fortnite. We can talk about EA work around working on macs as well

Windows supports Vulkan

Not really though. Vulcan support is provided by the GPU drivers, not by the Windows OS itself. IHVs could probably offer Vulkan support on macOS if they wanted. Of course, there is no incentive for them to do it. Having better gaming performance (which is in part achieved by specialised/optimized drivers) is a major factor for driving GPU purchases. In case of Macs, the deal is already sealed, so GPU vendors won't spend time optimising their drivers for games. Which is by the way the main reason why Windows will be always faster for games.

Yes but either way Vulkan is supported on windows whereas Apple just doesn’t period

Yes metal is better but why refuse outright Vulkan support ?

We don’t know that happened back then. Apple’s name was on the list, then it wasn’t. My guess is that they were disappointed with where Vulcan was going and dropped out, deciding that they can roll their own thing. Whether the decision was correct remains to be yet seen. As to why they decided not to support it anyway is rather obvious: why invest additional work into implementing an interface that is going to compete with your own?

I asked someone I know with an i7 2018 model to test it. He says it runs better performance wise now on MacOs, maybe even better than on Bootcamp because he can get the resolution to 2200 x something and still get 60 fps (shadows, post processing and motion blur off, textures high, view distance Epic, anti aliasing on medium), so that seems great.

However, he did mention two things:
1) He gets the good performance on his second boot of the game. So he starts the game, loads a round of Playground which takes very long to load (which it did for me as well), then he gets out of the game. He starts the game again, loads another round of Playground and after loading quits the round and can play the game normally by picking any mode he wants to play. If he doesn't do this, on his first round he will skip the first island and will load somewhere near the end of the bus drop on his first round and he found FPS will be good one time and really bad the other.

2) He did say that image quality seems way worse on MacOs for things just a little further away, like there is some setting that is getting turned down on MacOs that's not on Windows, or filter that smudges the screen that's not there on Windows. Don't know if that's a specific performance optimization done for MacOs.

Anyway, it seems that at least some of the issues are resolved under MacOs

The above will solve the performance issues and you'll be able to play a full round at 1800x1100 with medium settings at 55-60 fps. So that's really good! The problem is however your laptop will become really, really hot. Especially the part above the keyboard which almost becomes too hot to touch. My expected reason for this is that the current Bootcampdrivers.com drivers don't fully support the Macbook 2018 models with the T2 chips, which makes it so that the GPU doesn't get recognized as 555X/560X, the OS looses data from the fans and cooling doesn't work optimally. This may cause the fan curve to be less than ideal and cause the excessive heat on the GPU.

MacsFanControl should always be installed when using my BootCampDrivers.com drivers, because they are not downclocked by default like Apple's stock drivers, so the cards may run hotter when pushed. Also set an FPS limit to 59 FPS so that the graphics card is not over-working unnecessarily (this basically works a bit like Radeon Chill). Setting it to 59 rather than 60 FPS actually helps with screen-tearing so long as the card can keep up with whats going on on-screen.
