Is this possible? Tried playing a few 1080p YouTube vids, but seems to be playing them pretty low res and can't see a option to switch to 720p/1080p like on desktop.

Are you using the built-in Youtube app or the mobile website? I've always found the latter to give much better results and they should play in HD. You can set an icon for it on your desktop as well.

I played a 1080p on YouTube and it looked great to me.

Use the website. Tried a few 1080p videos and they are 100% not playing the 1080p version in the YouTube app (tried them on wifi, but shouldn't matter).

How come Apple updated the iPad screen without updating their YouTube app to take advantage of that?

It's a shame that 1080p videos on YouTube are low quality. On the iPad the artefacts are clearly visible. I would love some high Bitrate sources.

And still low res videos even on LTE. I never had a problem streaming YouTube videos in low res on my 3G iPad (first gen) why do we have LTE for Christ sake ?

Nice, that's definetly more like 1080p. Tried both the YouTube app and the mobile youtube site, neither seem to play in HD though, although the site does give better quality than the app.

So how can we watch 1080p content i.e. other than your own video recordings with the iPad, where is this content, other than possibly iTunes... That will work on the new iPad?

Edit: Using OplayerHD (lite) with the YouTube URL under the video details select "share" and then select hd you'll see also works.

Protip: hide your YouTube app somewhere and make a home screen bookmark for It's infinitely superior than that 5+ year old app that's been the same since the original iPhone release.

You can toggle HQ play but it doesn't specify what the resolution is.

Hmm, the YouTube App won't work I think, the website don't know.
But I think if want to play smoothly without tackle maybe could use some 3rd party tools like video converter to do this.

Wait a minute, I thought the Youtube app always plays at the highest resolution. So if a video has a resolution of 1080p, the Youtube app will play it at 1080p and no switching back.

Besides, I thought the main complaint about the Youtube app was the speed, not the resolution.

I can hear that data odometer just ticking away streaming 1080 over LTE.

I want to bring this thread back up because Im still not believing that the YouTube is streaming 1080p to the ipad? With that said, I don't believe iTunes trailers app is either. Imdb is 720p max. Does anyone know a website that I can see an actual 1080p video? I updated my home Internet speed so I want to test it out.

If your iPad is jailbroken, you can download ProTube from Cydia to play youtube videos at their full quality, and even save them for watching later.

There are some setting in the You Tube panel. Check it carefully. I know that it will work.
