I was mid update to 10.15.6 and my iMac is black screen.

Any tips to get this to power back on.

I called Applecare - 0 luck......

thx

Arg , no luck.....

The iMac was mid-flight 10.15.6 update....

then when it was supposed to reboot as part of process it shutdown but never came back.......

I tried the reset tip but feels dead as a doorknob (even though I dont think it is) I have had no HW issues

So it does not turn on at all?

You can either try re-seating the RAM, and try to feel around the back of the iMac for any fan movement.

If you struggle with this, you can unplug the machine, hold down the power button, and plug the machine in whilst holding the power button down - keep it pressed down for another 5 or so seconds, then turn your iMac on normally, if it turns on the fan should ramp to max.

It's entirely possible if you are only getting the fan movement in the machine, the machine turning off midway through Catalina installer might've been updating the firmware, and the sudden turn off could have messed up the firmware on the machine.

So that tip I hear the fans on MAX. I see no screen activity..........

Any ideas or am I hosed?

@TwoH I am so close

After your tip I powered off for 10 seconds, powered on and I have screen action.

Strange mouse worked, but keyboard had issues

I am not logged in yet, taking forever and the fans are still on high blast

Any tips ?????

It feels "woken" but not normal

I at least see the screen but cannot do anything.

Tried to boot into recovery mode and the line is only inch of progress and Apple Logo.....

What about boot from external drive or am I toast?

Try booting from an external drive if you have one and see how it goes. Have you again tried a NVRAM/PRAM reset to see if this helps with anything?

Does the machine still have a working screen if you unplug, and replug your machine to reset the speed of fan?

OK. I selected boot from external drive and I chose (MacHD, not Mac OS Update)

I am now logged on 10.15.5, but fans are still running at mx from the tip provided earlier.

Any idea how to stop the fans ?

THANK YOU EVERYONE, especially @TwoH !!!!

After a subsequent reboot and login, the Mac mysteriously continued and finished the update so I am in !!!!

I will now proceed to make a bootable catalina and do a fresh install as I do not trust these bits but I am super happy !!!!

Never heard the plugin in power while pressing the power button trick. One for the ages. Surprised Apple Support did not try

I had that 2013 imac with new h.d. 4 trips to the apple holes...75 mi round trip no luck--brought it home unplugged everything held down the power button...unplugged -- plugged it back in a safe boot ...took a really long time--then did a complete restore from scratch-- worked the only other things is can be bad power switch on the back or faulty cord...never deal with apple friendly"i love you let me give you a hug" apple morons...always ask for a senior advisor have them call you back those kids are reading screens .... so reload os from scratch if you get it to come up...the unplugg hold dead power switch should clear it for reload-

Thank You. I agree. This thing finally came back to life after the hold the power button down as you plug it in the wall trick. Never knew that one. This forum helped me, not Applecare support. Applecare said my local store had no appointments and I had to check daily for an opening Gotta love that support.

I absolutely will reimage as soon as I triple check my backups :)

mine would start to boot then hang over and over and over...finally I brought it home ...and somehow was able to do a NEW restore of, I think Catalina.--just as if it was brand new out of the box...works perfect tho I am presently really pissed off at safari and apple in general--so I had a corrupted version of the Catalina..thanks apple morons..--I ever so often unplug hold button etc...the reason- apple has tightend up their stuff so nothing else will run or run well ...adblockers youtube newspapers etc anything non apple is problems.(for me.) now I have dumped safari..edge chorme firefox tor etc..I am happier...
