Two weeks ago I upgraded from a 6s to the 8 Plus. While I was at the Apple Store I used their public Wi-Fi to setup the backup from iCloud and I have been using the Wi-Fi at my house which required putting in the password for it just one time. However I'm starting to notice when going out to restaurants which have public Wi-Fi after clicking them it also says "Connection unsecured" and it also said it this morning when I went to a sport card expo at a major convention centre on their public Wi-Fi. I'm wondering is that a problem with my 8 Plus Wi-Fi or is it just bad luck with a few locations? The reason I ask is next month I'm going on vacation and I like to use the Wi-Fi offered at the various Hilton, Marriott hotels I will be staying at along the way and the Wi-Fi at Walt Disney World. So would those connections come up as normal like at the Apple Store or not? One thing I do wonder is if turning on the Wi-Fi assist might help with this? Anyway I made a Guinness Bar reservation at the Apple Store to see what they say, however if anyone here knows the answer I would appreciate it.

If it matters my Dad also just got iPhone 8 2 days after me and he's having the same issue with the Wi-Fi in public places, with the exception at the Apple Store when setting it up.

You aren’t having a problem, that’s the way it works. My phone displays the same warning. It only happens on public unsecured wifi networks. Apple is just letting you know it’s not very safe

The issue is connecting to these Wi-Fi networks like I previously did with my 6s. At the Hilton and Marriott locations when they Wi-Fi comes on all I do is type in my last name and room number. At Disney World their Wi-Fi comes up when I turn it on. I'm just wondering if the problem I had connecting at other locations besides the Apple Store is a problem or not?

So how come with my 6s that never came up when going onto public Wi-Fi networks?

Does turning on the Wi-Fi assist make a difference or not?

I also read online about someone not being able to connect at a Starbucks and did a hard reset.

Before my appointment at the Apple Store I will try the Wi-Fi at the food court in the same mall, because as I said before the public Wi-Fi inside the Apple Store worked for me and that's what I want to happen with the Wi-Fi at the Hotels I stay at.

I'm sure the answer to part of this is the Apple Store is secured and why the Wi-Fi works there, however at the other places I mentioned the Wi-Fi should also work despite being public locations.

I guess this will eat at me until Friday when I have the appointment with Apple, so that's why I keep checking if any other date before at a early time becomes available.

Always take care when using a public WIFi. What you think you are logging onto may not be what you think. Scammer will create a hotspot that looks exactly like the Panera, or other site and record everything you do. If you got to do banking or something sensitive, go back to cellular.

The only time I use Wi-Fi outside my house has been at locations like the Apple Store or in Hotels when I'm on vacation.

Since I'm from Canada using Wi-Fi while at any Hotels I stay at in the United States has been great because I don't have to use any of the roaming charges from the long distance package I purchase through my carrier. That's why I hope that next month with my 8 Plus I can keep using Wi-Fi at those locations like I previously did with my 6s.

And yet I had no roaming charges when I was in Canada

I am not sure you have an issue here, you keep connecting to public wifi networks, which are un-secure, which is why your phone is letting you know that. I was at the apple store today, and got the same message for their wifi network. There is no issue, it is just your phone letting you know you are on a nonsecure public wifi network, so be careful what you do on them.

The thing is at one location I used their Wi-Fi with my 6s and it worked and with my 8 Plus I get that unsecured network message.

But it still works, it is just giving you a heads up about the network. Your 6s should have done the same, maybe it was on a pervious iOS version.

The difference this time is my apps won't work. For example on my TSN Go app the first thing that pops up are upcoming games for NHL, MLB and NBA. Since there are NHL and NBA games being played those are not listed and I can't read anything else on the app. It's the same for my other apps.

Ah, okay, they should still work on wifi, hopefully you and apple can get it fixed.

The message is normal.

What might be happening is the public wifi locales require one to agree to terms and conditions before allowing access. Bring up a web page when at these locations to see if t&c screen pops up.

At one of the locations I would use the Wi-Fi that message use to come up and it doesn't anymore.

Now as an example at the Apple Store when I got my 8 Plus, no such message appeared. I selected the Wi-Fi and it worked. I can't say if all other Apple Stores are like that.

I also previously mentioned how a similar message like that showed up when using it at a Hilton or Marriot branded Hotel locations, however once I filled in my room information I didn't need to do that anymore for the remainder of my stays. Now when I use the Wi-Fi at Walt Disney World it just comes on when I select it. So I'm hoping all that will happen next month when I'm travelling with my 8 Plus for the first time, like I did with my 6s.

Were you able to get around it and be able to use your apps?

As I said before with my 8 Plus when I clicked on some of my apps no information about them loaded or they said no internet connection, despite the Wi-Fi symbol being on like in your screen shot.

Did you do the above suggestion and try to load a page in safari? Sometimes you have to sign in or accept terms on these public wifi networks to use their data. You will find that at hotels for sure.

Right now I'm at home and the Wi-Fi in my house works fine without any problems. It's when I'm out in public at a store or restaurant where I'm seeing this. Sometime this week before my Apple Store appointment I will be going to a book store which has a Starbucks inside where I have used their Wi-Fi in the past on my 6s, so I will try it on my 8 Plus and see if it comes on like in the past.

I also know exactly what you said about using Wi-Fi when staying in a Hotel because what you said happens the first time I sign onto it. I'm hoping I get this issue resolved one way or another before I go on vacation next month, so I won't have any Wi-Fi issues when travelling.

I was able to use Safari, email and the NHL app but, my news app said no connection. As another poster stated, I had to accept terms before allowing me to join the network.
