Please help! Mac Air not recognising Midi

So this has been driving me mad. Long story Short- Midi Keyboards are not being recoginised by mac air.

Keyboards work totally fine with friends mac running Maveric and Garage band 11.

I am running maverick and garage band 10.6.2 (latest version)

I have also tried midi monitor app and still nothing.

Usb ports work for everything else (printers hard drives etc)

Midi connections are correct- they work on other peoples stuff!

Any ideas why new mac air wont see the midi keyboards?

Have you tried opening Audio/MIDI setup, and "adding a new device"...?
