It may be simpler to replace the drive or take the drive out of the machine, connect to another computer, erase it, put it back into the Macbook, and reinstall the os.

The problem is that they don't have a backup.

They need to unlock the File Vault protected drive.

Sounds like it's time for Genius Bar service appointment.

Without the file vault password, none of the data would be accessible which is why I suggested replacing the drive or wiping it if there isn't anything that needs to be retrieved.

I'm not sure that the apple store can access the data without the password.

If the Macbook has entered vintage status, apple may not look at it or help in any meaningful way.

I guess you all are somehow right..., but
it's time to identify what model the MBP exactly is (year, model). Can it do Internet Recovery or not? Does it have removable battery or not?
There are threads here describing the -1006F and here describing the -1007F error, but I couldn't find any official reference for those error codes. Can someone find it?
It seems that some users could fix the error by detaching the battery connection, but I'm uncertain if that's behind the scope of @Raenichols or not. It surely depends on the exact model and maybe it's safest to take it to some repair service.

EDIT: It sounds more logical what @Weaselboy posted in #33. Might more likely be some proxy or misconfigured WLAN. Sadly, there are no official docs about these error codes.

OP:

It would sure help if you told us:
1. Which MacBook and what year it was made
2. What version of the OS is on it
3. Where in the world you are (USA?)

Do you have access to ANOTHER Mac at all?

If you are in a part of the world where there's an Apple store close by, take it to them...

I believe that message you are seeing is because you are trying to use Internet recovery on a wifi network not supported by Internet recovery (like WEP).

Can you disable all wifi encryption on the router just temporarily so you can get this done. Just leave the wifi open with no password and try again and let us know what happens.
