Did you look at the specs of the new Macbooks? Hard to plug into a port that doesn't exist.

i am aware that the new ones dont have FW. why i suggested the FW to ethernet adapter.

also, he said i dont have FW. wasnt sure if he was talking about his cam or computer. I now see he stated he has a "new" macbook, but was unsure if his terms of "new" meant the latest model, or he just got one (possibly older rev).

either way, I posted that info as it seems there are several people in here that are quite unsure of what to do (one poster mentioned trying on a laptop and iMac).

ok, now im kinda confused. my cam HAS the firewire port but my com doesnt. so what do i do????? and what do i need?

as i said above. you can get a Firewire to Ethernet adapter.

or get an older macbook or macbook pro, iMac, mac mini... powerbook....

(i just did a quick google, and found sites claiming FW to ethernet wont work in OSX right now).

So, I guess you need to figure out a workaround for transferring via USB or get a new computer, or a camera that uses Flash memory for storage which will transfer via USB.

As a video professional for going on 10 years, i would recommend getting a mac with FW as miniDV is much more reliable than a HDD camera for tons of reasons.

The problem is that his new computer doesn't have Firewire thanks to Apple. He should not have to buy another computer just because of Apples mistake.

i agree that apple should not have dropped the FW on macbooks. and it does indeed suck for those users that are now out of luck... however, if I was going to drop a thousand dollars on a computer, I would do enough research to make sure it fits my needs completely. I suspect that alot of the people that are complaining are ones that just needed the newest coolest thing, and spent money without doing any research whatsoever. Considering the DAY they were released I read dozens of forums, articles and discussions complaining about lack of FW on them... which would have led me to do a bit more research before buying. And I would say its more of the consumers mistake for purchasing something that does not fit his or her needs, rather than to call it apples mistake.

Please clarify. What camcorder and what computer?

Does a firewire to ethernet device even exist?

-camcorder- sony dcr-pc55
computer- Macbook 13.3 inch OS X

Is that the new Aluminum MacBook?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think all Mac, except the new Al MacBook have a Firewire port.

Apple still sells (quietly) the white MacBook WITH Firewire. I think the specs are close to the Al MacBook. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a AL MacBook rev 2 with a Firewire port in he future. (This is a rumor site :D)

yes it is the Al macbook....im just going to give them all to my friend who has the regular macbook white (which i assume has a FW port) n let him do it rather then going through all this hassle.... thanks anyways for all of u guys that helped me

I have a regular macbook white. I can connect to my miniDV camcorder. A Sony DCR-TRV33. Not problem.
Get a external hard drive and get your bud to move your video to the drive. About 10-13 gig per hour (tape). Maybe connect to tv while doing it. Couple of beer & some good laughs.

Don't forget to call Apple and voice your discontent with lack of Firewire.

Have never tried this, nor thought of it as a solutions, but if you were to get a multi interface external drive (one with USB and FW), perhaps the mac would recognize the camera. Plug the USB from the external drive to the Mac, then run the Firewire from the camera to the external drive...

I have daisy chained many externals together along with cameras, and DVCPro decks, and everything was always recognized by the mac. I wonder if that is a way to do it.

In final cut pro, you can select which drive to save imported footage (known as the "scratch disk") not sure if you can in iMovie as I have never tried, but if you can set where to save to, you could say you want footage to go to the external drive, and if everything is showing up, it would allow you to import DV footage to external, while showing up for use via the USB connection to the mac.

Give it a try, but I doubt it will work.

Firewire Sony vs mac problem

Hello, I am a new member desperately seeking for answers. I see your forum has been discussing my problem, but I still have not found any solution. O.K. I have Mac OS X 10.5.7 and I have a not very new Sony DCR-HC90 camcorder. When I purchased the computer over a year ago the camera worked fine through the firewire in iMovie, and then something happened a few months later. I do not know if it could be system updates or time capsule installation, but my camera is not recognized by the computer anymore. It is in Play mode, it shows VD-In once I plug in the firewire cord (camera recognizes it). There is nothing on the computer though. When I check Info about Firewire it doesn't show it at all. I work at school. Today I took my camera and tested it with different firewire cords on 6 different Macs and mac notebooks. Still nothing, exactly the same thing on all of them. Canon camera appears to work fine with iMovie. Does anybody have an idea what to do next? Is it compatability issues suddenly?

firewire issues

I contacted Sony, they think the problem is with Mac system and reffered me to them. I see it could be a problem with camera, but why none of the computers recognize that the firewire cord is plugged in. It doesn't show anywhere. ???? It reminds me of the time when my Time Macine refused to work, and time capsule would never mount. All Mac tech support gave up, thanks to the last lady who suggested to try setting it up through a guest account. Who would think? I think Leopard has some flaws, as my camera was used only ten times at most, I don't see it suddenly going bad on me.

Does anyone know if the FW800 on the new 13" MBP will work with iLink (I have the Sony HDR-HC5) or if I will need to buy the Firewire 800 9-6 Adapter? I know it works with the FW400, but my new macbook is on the way, and I'm not sure if I should order the adapter.
